Hyacinth Bag

10

February is my month for the Bag of the Month Club, and I’m here today to show you the pattern that went out to club members today. This is the Hyacinth Bag!

When I was first trying to think of what type of bag to design for the club, I couldn’t decide what type of bag to make at first; a lot of people often ask for a small bag, but then I decided to design a cross body bag. A cross body bag was never in my thoughts for a bag design, and so I decided to go for the less obvious choice.

One of the main features of the bag is that underneath the flap is space to store credit cards and cash in the zippered pocket. I thought it might be handy for, say, if you were going to a quilt show (maybe QuiltCon) and needed to quickly take out cash to pay for all of your fabric purchases. I made my bag using ‘First of Infinity’ fabrics which you can find at Pink Castle Fabrics. If you like text fabric, you are going to love this line!!

There’s also a zippered closure at the top of the bag, to keep all of your things safe and secure. There are topstitched pockets on the inside of the bag, and also a zippered pocket on the back of the outside of the bag.

Finished Size: 11” long x 12” tall x 2” deep

Supplies

  • 1 yard of Exterior Fabric (I like using quilting cotton or decorator-weight fabric)
  • 3/4 yard of Lining Fabric
  • 1/2 yard of By Annie’s Soft and Stable, available at local quilt shops or on-line
  • (Soft and Stable is a 1/8” thick, foam sew-in interfacing; one of my testers also recommends automotive headliner fabric in place of the Soft and Stable; you can also substitute a needled fleece fusible interfacing for the Soft and Stable, such as Pellon #TP971F Thermolam Plus fusible interfacing)
  • 2-1/2 yards of 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or medium-weight fusible interfacing)
  • One 1-1/2” metal rectangle
  • One 1-1/2” metal slider
  • One pair of invisible magnetic snaps     OR     One pair of regular 1/2” magnetic snaps
  • Note about hardware: My Sew Sweetness Purseware will be available starting next week!
  • 14” regular zipper
  • Two regular 9” zippers (omit one zipper if not making the cash and credit card slots)

If you are interested, Pink Castle Fabrics has kitted all the supplies to make the bag (just add fabric and zippers), which is available here. You can also purchase a hardware-only kit here.

This pattern was tested by two great ladies, and I want to thank both of them for their hard work!

Paula made this bag in beautiful blue Valori Wells fabrics. The black strap and the black zipper really help the aspects of the bag pop!

And here’s her pretty blue polka dot lining. Thank you again Paula, it’s gorgeous!

Leslie from 50 Sq. Ft. Studio made her bag in Tula Pink ‘Moonshine’ fabrics. Leslie and I share a common love of Tula Pink, and she did an amazing job on her tester bag, it looks beautiful!
