This is in reference to the Jamie Dress Sew Along (I wish I could help you in real life, rofl). You can also apply this in making any gathered skirt.
I completely forgot about this until I saw everyone commenting on it in the Flickr group, but here’s a tip to get your dress not to make your butt look big in the back. I actually got this from the Serendipity Studio Monique Dress, where she had this written in the pattern, since this is a gathered skirt as well.
(in my own words) Lay your dress flat on your ironing board. Streamline your skirt so it falls straight. Plunk your iron on top of the skirt, much the same way that you did when you made the waistband for the Jamie Dress. Iron pleats toward the top of the skirt near the waistband (you don’t have to organize them, just do it randomly) into the skirt. This will help the skirt lay in a more pleasing manor against your body.
Hope this helps!
P.S. Also, make sure you are trying your dress on along the way. I try mine on about 5-6 times, after every large step in the instructions, to make sure that it is on track as far as fitting. I did recommend sizing up the bodice, and I did notice I needed to trim mine down a small bit, so fitting it along the way will help you out (put it on, pinch the bodice with your fingers – you will need about 1/2″ on each side for the zipper (and also account for a little more because when you zig-zag stitch the sides of the dress in a later step, you will also be taking some fabric away due to the zig-zag) – if you notice you need to trim, pin/have someone help you, then mark what you need to trim down…do not cut unless you are absolutely sure that’s where you want it…if you’re not sure, you can always baste it and come back later).

Thanks for the tip! I was concerned about that after reading Kitschycoo’s review of her first attempt at the pattern. Although I was hoping this post would be less specific to the dress and more about how to make my butt look smaller in all situations. ๐
LMAO! I mean I wish I could but THANK YOU!!!!!! I will have to do this since my backside does NOT need to look any larger :o) I thought about including the extra in the bodice in hopes of it increasing my upper portion visually.
Hahaha I love the title of this post – I just bought my fabric! I won’t be making it for the deadline but I’m still really excited! ๐ Thanks for all the tips!
Sara, I thought all this time that I was following you, and wondered why I hadn’t seen any posts from you! Oops, got that fixed tonight… BUT I wanted to tell you that I blogged about you and your site tonight and how you sent me those amazing fabric scraps in our scrap swap. Thank you so much, I loved the beautiful fabric!!! My daughter just asked me to make her the wallet you made. Apparently she wants that to be my next project. So I might be emailing you soon for tips ๐
