Holland Road Bag

Holland Road Web Cover

Today I’m pleased to show a brand new sewing pattern called the Holland Road Bag, available now in my pattern shop! This is a medium-sized bucket-style bag that features a bit of hardware on the straps and an optional fabric covered button closure (or use a magnetic snap in the lining instead!). Because this bag has fewer pattern pieces, it is a quicker sew and is categorized for a confident beginner sewist that is willing to give purse hardware a shot!

My sample bag was made using Priory Square fabric by Katy Jones for Art Gallery fabrics. I used a yellow solid, and strong 40wt. Aurifil thread for the entire bag. I actually wrote this pattern last year, maybe around Thanksgiving, but the timing for release just didn’t fall into place right away. It’s hard to keep things quiet for so long, ha!

Finished Size: 13” long x 11” tall x 2” deep

Supplies

  • 1/2 yard of Exterior Fabric
  • 1 yard of lining fabric
  • 2/3 yard of solid fabric for straps
  • 2-1/2 yards of 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or medium-weight fusible interfacing)
  • 1/2 yard of By Annie’s Soft and Stable, available at local quilt shops or on-line
  • (Soft and Stable is a 1/8” thick, foam sew-in interfacing; one of my testers also recommends automotive headliner fabric in place of the Soft and Stable; you can also substitute a needled fleece fusible interfacing for the Soft and Stable, such as Pellon #TP971F Thermolam Plus fusible interfacing)
  • Four 1-1/2” wide metal rectangle rings
  • 1/2” magnetic snap     -OR-     1-1/2” decorative button     (for top closure; I used the Dritz button covering kit)
  • Optional: Four purse feet

I used a fabric covered button for my bag; I purchased the 1-1/2″ Dritz covered button kit and used a bit of the lining map print for my button. I love the huge button and think that it stands out pretty well on the dark colors of my exterior fabric!

This is a slim bag that fits comfortably under your arm. The sewing instructions feature 12 pages of clear instruction accompanied by 27 full-color step-by-step photos, as well as templates to make the bag.

I had a lot of fun making this bag and hope you like it too!

As always, thank you to all of my wonderful testers for making the bag and giving me notes for edits! They always do a wonderful job and I love seeing the huge variety in the fabrics they have chosen! A lot of the testers used faux leather for either their bag body, or the straps. Most admitted this was challenging for a smaller-sized bag like this.

P1010870Terry made her bag in a sunny Anna Maria Horner fabric, with orange straps. I don’t usually have a lot of orange/yellow prints in my stash, but this is just amazing! So beautiful, and I love the large fabric print centered in the middle. Great job, Terry!

hollandplaidLeah of L3Designs made her bag in a bright plaid, and she added a front zipper pocket to the outside of the bag (and check out that buckle!). Love it!!

hollanddanielleDanielle made her Holland Road Bag in bright Cotton+Steel fabrics. The basics are just perfect like this for straps and other accents! Great job Danielle!

IMG_4146Stacey of Stacey in Stitches made this gorgeous version in Nordika fabric. You probably can’t tell by this particular photo, but Stacey was very clever and made self-purse hardware out of the red fabric out of rectangles of fabric. How awesome is that!!

lizcoverLiz of Moments… made her bag in a beautiful sketchy purple fabric. Liz always makes the most beautiful collages for her tester bags, and this is no exception! Just perfect and so pretty, Liz!

1st BagVanessa made her Holland Road Bag in this yummy print by Melody Miller for Cotton+Steel. I love how it looks with the gray webbing that she used for the straps, and I also like the pop of green you get from the lining fabric showing on the button loop. Gorgeous Vanessa!

1212141614b_resizedTeresa made her bag in Tula Pink ‘Foxfield’ fabrics. This is one of my favorite all-time prints. I love the addition of the zippered pocket in the front, it allows for an extra bit of storage space. Beautiful Teresa!!

Blue and Pink Holland Road Bag No 1a Floral Holland Road Bag with Brown Straps

Black and Beige Holland BagPeta made THREE bags, and as she couldn’t find the hardware locally, she improvised! Love it. Peta always adds some special embellishments to her bags, and this time is no different! I love the green floral bag so much, it’s my fav!

HollandBagErin from Just Plain Lovely made her bag in a pink Tina Givens fabric, with faux leather for the straps. Love how great the leather looks with this bag! Wonderful work Erin!

100_2056Bree from My Crafty Crap made this version with military inspired fabric and webbing for the straps. This was a great choice for a wonderful set of Christmas gifts that Bree made, and the bag is finished perfectly! Great job Bree!

Holland Road 2Maria made her bag in a gorgeous tapestry-looking fabric, combined with leather. Maria’s e-mail about this bag had me cracking up, “I was thinking this bag as a present for my mum, everytime I test a pattern of yours and she sees the finished bag, she always asks me with charming eyes who is that bag for.” Hilarious!!! And I can see why she wanted it!

10891769_10203500601583729_6748888890438695250_nLaura made her bag in a bright paisley print, with dark bubbles for the straps. I love the combination of fabrics, and I think the straps almost look 3-dimensional because of the print. Beautiful work, Laura!

IMG_9427Laura made her bag in a sunny Amy Butler fabric, with light chocolate straps. This bag looks perfect, and you can see her little purse feet peaking out from the bottom of the bag!

Hollandbag (1)Jamie made her bag in out-of-print Anna Maria Horner fabric (one of my favorite prints from her!). I love that the diamonds somehow ended up being centered just perfectly, and overall just a lovely bag!

image1Joyce made her bag in a beautiful fabric from Ikea (this bag inspired me to get some!). I love how well this large-scale print works on the bag, and Joyce did a lovely job of complimenting it with the contrasting strap. You can read more about Joyce’s bag on her blog here.

DSC_0005Ami-May of Stitching Insane made her bag out of a ‘Cherie’ fabric by Frances Newcombe. I like the contrasting color of the straps on this one, it’s just beautiful! Great job!

Photo 15-12-2014 3 23 56 pmSylvia took her bag to the beach! Sylvia used a great metallic dot fabric for her bag and paired it with neon green and hot pink! This is sizzling!!!!

IMG_0483Cindy from Raspberry Sunshine made this striking version of the bag in a chocolate fabric from Art Gallery Fabrics and red straps. Pressed and finished to perfection as always Cindy!

image3Alyssa made her bag in this bright chevron fabric, and I can see why she’s gotten lots of compliments on it! The dark button on the front looks great, and overall a really fun bag! Wonderful work Alyssa!

alli holland rightishAlli made her bag with Matrushka doll fabrics, and she spent a lot of time on her bag with the beautiful topstitching on the straps. Terribly cute with the red button on the front too! I love it!

amberhollandAmber from Last Yesterday made her bag in one of my favorite types of fabrics, newsprint! I love that the red straps really make this fabric pop, and did you notice the crossword puzzle on the button? A-dor-a-ble!!

HollandRd03Norma from Norma’s Bag Boutique made this gorgeous blue tote, and here’s a view of her beautiful rounded bottom and the large purse feet that she used. So pretty Norma!

sshollandbag

hollandbag3Judy made TWO versions of the bag! The first one she made in a faux leather, and the second in a Cotton + Steel print by Sarah Watts. Judy recommended that a less experienced sewist should go with a quilting cotton, since faux leather is a bit more challenging to sew. Wonderful work on these two bags, Judy!

bag 3Nancy made her bag in a beautiful Windham fabric, with a tan solid that coordinates with some of the leaves in the flowers in the print.

IMG_3948Kellie made her bag in hoarded Jay McCarroll fabric, and the fabric really pops when combined with the yellow! Kellie said she spent about 2 hours making this, and that it’s a relatively quick sew. Great work Kellie!

IMG_4673Rebecca of Flying Sewlo made this gorgeous bag in geometric print fabrics from Jessica Swift’s ‘Harmony’ collection. I love that she went for a print fabric for the straps, they really draw you in to the main fabric! Great work Rebecca!

IMG_3144_600x800Anna really “went wild” with her fabric for the outside of her Holland Road Bag! She made this darling scene with an elephant family on the front of her bag! I love that the leaves are attached to the horizontal panel underneath the straps! So creative and beautiful!

(null)Tiffany of This Crafty Fox made her bag in a gorgeous floral fabric on a neutral background, with matching straps. I love this subtle combination, as it really allows the flower to pop! Beautiful work, and with a cute fabric button too!

photo 3 (2)Maire made her bag in a purple coastal print, and she used a button from her grandmother. I think this bag is finished beautifully, wonderful work Maire!

DSC_0046Gwen made her bag with a wool blend and vinyl for the straps. She said it was her second time sewing with vinyl, and I think it looks amazing! I think the added rivets on the straps are a really special touch! Pressed and presented to perfection!

IMG_6041

Debbie made her bag in a light gray textured fabric, along with rust-colored straps and front button.

20141205_163557Audrey made this adorable psychedelic skulls bag with hot pink straps. I also like the contrast stitching on the straps, which really tie back in to the black background fabric. Wonderful work Audrey!

Thank you again for checking out my Holland Road bag pattern!! I hope this post inspires you to sew a bag of your own!

No, wait, that, NO WAIT that’s my… anyway I nearly screamed at Amber from Last Yesterday’s newsprint tote, *speechless!* Then I saw the gray textured bag Debbie made with maroon straps (would love to see inside, kerchief print?) I’d use that every day. What a cool pattern and awesome tester ladies! Donna
