VIDEO: How to Use Traditional and Invisible Magnetic Snaps

purseware4

Traditional magnetic snaps with prongs and invisible magnetic snaps, which are encased in clear vinyl sleeves, are two pieces of purse hardware that can be used to easily add top closure in your bag or to finish a bag’s flap.

I’m pleased to share this post, which I wrote for the Craftsy blog, which features a step-by-step photo tutorial on how to use both types of snaps.

You can find my new Sew Sweetness Purseware in my shop here.

I’ve also created this video tutorial to share how I install both types of magnetic snaps. I hope you enjoy!

Thanks. I’ve taken a few purse classes and we never used the invisible snaps. Now I know and I can’t wait to make another purse using them.

I wondered how those magnetic snaps worked. I thought it would be harder to install them. Thanks for the tutorial.

Hi Sara. I made a purse for my daughter a few years ago and it’s becoming thread bare in spots, so I plan on making her a new bag soon. Meanwhile she has gone back to her store bought bag to use. The store bought bag has those magnetic snaps that do not have the prongs and my daughter has complained that the magnets are annoying because apparently they are so strong that when she gets out of her car or walks by anything metal the magnet will stick to her car, lol!!! So she asked me about closures to bags and I told her a twist lock or magnetic snap, and that’s when she told me about the magnets in her bag. I said the snap type isn’t that strong and I have never had an issue with the magnet sticking to the car or other metal objects. So I am wondering if the magnets you showed with the clear vinyl around them are strong magnets like on my daughter’s purse? If so I think I will continue to use the snap type.

I want to Make a reversible bag where the invisible magnets will work either way but because of how magnets will repel when turned a certain way I’m not sure how to go about it. Any advice? Thanks.

    Hi Sara –
I have tried unsuccessfully in the past to sew in invisible magnets – they want to stick to the sewing machine throat plate. Do you have any suggestions on how to get around that problem? I must admit, I’ve only tried this on fused fabric – not just the interfacing. Plus I use Vilene fusible fleece (h640) which would get torn up by my feeddogs. Help!
Love your patterns – so creative yet practical.
    Thank you!
    Christine
