Hi friends! Nicole from Modern Handcraft today with my sew along project from the fantastic new book written by Angela Pingel – A Quilter’s Mixology. The pattern that I instantly fell in love with was the Medallion Quilt that is shown in the book as a baby quilt. Since I didn’t need a baby sized quilt I decided on a wall hanging for my home – this mini quilt measures 24″ x 24″.

I was so excited when Sara asked me to be a part of this sew along, and I knew exactly what fabric I wanted to use – Handcrafted by Alison Glass. Alison was kind enough to send me some of this gorgeous new line and I love how this batik fabric was a perfect match for the medallion shape. I also love using special fabric in my wall hanging quilts knowing that I will see the quilt daily hanging in my home.

The pattern for this quilt gives you an option for using a die cutting machine. The drunkards path set I have for my Sizzix is a different size than the pattern calls for so my blocks were just a bit smaller, this helped me create a mini size instead of the larger baby quilt dimensions.

A Quilter’s mixology has a great mix of patterns – from table runners and pillows that are quick makes to larger quilts. So depending on how much time you have for a project there is definitely something for you. I am pretty new to curved piecing, only trying it out a few months ago on a small block. Curves in sewing are a bit intimidating but the tips Angela gives throughout the book are a huge help and before you know it you find yourself a bit addicted.

Angela’s photographs are fantastic and very clear to understand, as are her step by step directions. Take your time around the curves and really make sure that when you join up your squares to double check where the two curves connect to make a half circle. For my quilting I had some fun with Alison’s coordinating thread line from Aurifil making a different design in each color section. I did this using my regular sewing foot and using the edge of the foot as my guide.

I am so in love with my medallion quilt and would love to make a large size as a throw in my living room in a gray scale color theme.

I recommend this book to someone that is looking to add curves to your quilting and to give you an idea just how many different ways to use the drunkards path pattern. Thank you Sara for including me in this fun sew along and I hope you all enjoyed today’s project!

I love the quilting on this. Please tell me do you backstitch a bit when you finish each little round? Your not tying and burying all those threads are you? I’m new to this type of quilting and want to try this.
