Blazingstar Bag Sew Along – Week 1

Welcome to Week 1 of the Blazingstar Bag Sew Along!

This week, you’ll be choose your fabric. Then, cut out all of your fabric and attach it to the interfacing, and you’ll also be sewing up the zipper pockets. This week’s tasks will take you up to Step #8 in the pattern instructions.

I can’t wait to see what fabrics you’ve selected for your bag!

I discussed some other substrates that can be used for your bag on Sewcial Sunday, in case you need ideas for fabrics that you’d like to use for your bag. This sew along discussion is timestamped in the video:

When you’ve completed up to Step #8, snap a quick photo of your progress (your photo can either be of your fabric choice, your pieces cut out and attached to interfacing, or you can take a photo of your straps). Enter your photo below to be eligible for a randomly-drawn $50 gift certificate to www.sewsweetness.com! You have until May 28, 2022 to enter your photo.

Please enter your own photo in the linky tool below so your fellow sewists can see your beautiful work! Please email me if you need assistance ([email protected]).

Random winner will be chosen after May 28, 2022 out of all entries received. The winner for Week 1 was #66 Katie.

IMPORTANT: In the Linky Tool, when it asks #1 Link To, just enter www.sewsweetness.com.

Note: We’re currently noticing an issue with the Firefox browser not populating the entry section; if you do not see everyone else’s entered thumbnails or where to enter your photo (it should read “You are next…click here to enter”), either please try a different web browser (such as Google Chrome or Safari) or we would be happy to enter your photo for you if you’ll email it to [email protected]. Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience!

Having trouble uploading the picture from my computer. I don’t have a blog to do this and Linky shows up that it needs one.

    1. Bronwyn says:

Hi Joan – I’ve replied to your email and uploaded your photo. You don’t need a blog – IMPORTANT: In the Linky Tool, when it asks #1 Link To, just enter https://www.sewsweetness.com.

  3. Gail Laubenthal says:

Oh no! I misread the week one task and went up to page 8, so I posted my progress which would have been at the end of week 2. Can you delete my entry so I can add another? I guess I can start a new Blazingstar and finish this first one up. Thanks for your guidance.

    1. sewsweetness says:

Hi Gail! The task for Week 1 was to complete up to Step #8, so it sounds like you’re right on track!

      1. glaubent says:

No, I completed the outside zip pocket and stopped after that, so when I realized that I had gone too far, I decided to finish it. I will start another one and pay better attention to the weekly homework.

    2. Bronwyn says:

Hey Gail – I’ve deleted your entry 🙂

  4. sandra says:

How do I enter in the Linky Tool? I don’t see anywhere to click to get started. Thanks.

Hi Sandra, I’d be happy to help! You can email the photo to [email protected] and I can post it for you. Thank you!

        Thank you.

  5. Pamela says:

    Hello,

I decided to do this bag. I hope atleast 🙂 Anyway, this is the first time I get to use my Cricut Maker for cutting out the pieces. I guess I’m a bit confused or maybe I’m overthinking this.
The parts on the Mats, are they just cut 1 of each pattern piece?
    Such as:
    Mat #1 – Exterior Fabrics
    Front Cut-Out
    Strap Tab

    Mat #2 – Exterior Fabrics
    Zipper Pocket

Mat #3 – Exterior Fabric, Lining Fabric, Foam Interfacing, and Shape Flex
    Main Panel
    Front Pocket

    Thanks for the help 🙂

    1. sewsweetness says:

Hi Pamela! You can reference the pattern instructions (the Cutting Instructions) for how many pieces need to be cut from which fabrics. Thank you!

  6. Hi Bronwyn, thanks for the help with my photo, where are all the photos being posted? Are they not being posted until week two starts?

Or is it my browser? I use Safari, which isn’t always compatible with all content.

    1. Bronwyn says:

I think it must be your browser as they are all there and I’ve heard from others saying they can’t see them on Safari. Can you try another browser? I have a mac and have Safari as well as Google Chrome on it.

      1. Joan Buttafuoco says:

I can’t see the posts for week 1 today, was able to see them yesterday. I see no posts for week 2, nor do I see the link to submit a post. I tried Safari and Chrome on my iPad.

    2. Bronwyn says:

I am now on the blog using Safari and I can see everything fine. That’s on my MacBook not an iPad though. I’m not sure if that makes any difference.

  7. Pat Reese says:

Hi. I cannot find where to post my week one nor can I see the posts from everyone. I use an iPad and in previous sewalongs I was able to do both. Did something change?

    1. Bronwyn says:

As far as I’m aware nothing has changed. I’m not sure why some people can’t see the posts – I’ll ask Sara to look into it. Feel free to email me your photo and I will upload it: [email protected]

  8. Jacqueline says:

I still cannot figure out how to post my photo for week#1? Not sure why it seems so complicated

    1. Bronwyn says:

At the bottom of the thumbnails, it’s says “You are next… Click here to enter This list will close in 6 days, 8 hrs, 11 min (5/28/2022 11:59 PM North America – Eastern Standard Time)”. Can you see that? Feel free to email your photo and I’ll upload it if you can’t: [email protected]

  9. Pamela Rickbeil says:

This is my first bag and first sewsweetness project. I struggled to figure out why my “front pocket piece” looked so different from the instructions and the video. I didn’t understand until I was working on the 2nd Main panel that there were additional pieces of fabric, interfacing and foam to cut besides the pattern pieces (such as the strap, zipper pocket and side panel). I’ve got it now…I think.

    1. Bronwyn says:

Feel free to email [email protected] if you have questions 🙂

    2. Bronwyn says:

In Sara’s patterns, all squares and rectangles are not represented by pattern pieces; however, these pieces are called out in the Cutting Instructions for easy rotary cutting.

  10. Helena says:

Hi Bronwyn, I’m trying to upload my picture for week 1, using my iPhone. I looked thru the whole info, but cannot find the “ linky tool”. I really want to upload it myself, what am I missing. I’m also not seeing any pictures from other fellow sewist. This is definitely not my first sew along. Help!!

    1. Helena Provenzano says:

Please ignore my request. The pictures and linky tool eventually showed up.

      1. Bronwyn says:

Interesting!! Can you tell me what you did differently for it to show up as others are having issues too.
