Blazingstar Bag

I was looking for a small-ish bag with a lot of storage space, so I designed the Blazingstar Bag!

An online workshop is available to purchase for this pattern, watch the trailer below:

Online Workshop Length – 2 hours 1 minute

The top of the bag has a recessed zipper, and the front zippered pocket has a slip pocket as well as a mesh elastic pocket. The interior of the bag also has a slip pocket and a zipper pocket, and the back of the bag has a zipper pocket as well.

Finished Size: 9” long x 10” tall x 2” deep (23cm x 25cm x 5cm)

Supplies Needed to Make This Bag

  • 1 yard/metre of exterior fabric
  • 1 yard/metre of lining fabric
  • 1/3 yard/metre of foam interfacing (By Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, Bosal In-R-Form, or automotive headliner; if using Flex Foam, it is only 20” wide so please purchase 1-1/2 yard)
  • 3 yard/metre 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or med-weight fusible interfacing)
  • 24” handbag zipper for front pocket (I used a double-pull zipper; 1 pull will work as well)
  • Four 12” handbag zippers (if using zipper by the yard, wait to cut the zippers until directed to in the pattern)
  • Two 1” metal rectangles
  • 1” metal slider
  • 8” x 5” piece of mesh (20cm x 13cm)

The pdf pattern includes 12 pages of sewing instructions, complete with 34 step-by-step color photos.

Also included in the PDF pattern are printable pattern pieces for your home printer. The following files will all be included with your PDF pattern purchase:

  • SVG Files (for electric cutting machines, such as the Brother Scan N Cut and the Cricut Maker)
  • Projector Files (for use with home projectors for cutting out fabric; please see the group Projectors for Sewing for more information)
  • A0 Files (large-format 33″ x 46″ pattern page for printing at your local copy shop, in case you would rather not tape together the pattern pages that are included in the PDF pattern)

Optional acrylic templates are available for this pattern, in case you’d like to quickly cut out the fabric and interfacing that are needed for the project. This is especially helpful for those that make and sell bags for craft fairs or Etsy shops.

Thank you to Chera Phipbody for the lovely Blazingstar Bag photos. Chera made a slight modification to her bag by adding a small strip of fabric over the ends of her strap extenders on either side of the bag.

And you can find the Blazingstar Bag pattern and video now in my shop.

Check out the beautiful work from my pattern testers. They worked really hard on their bags and each one is unique!

Hi there! I purchased the pattern with the video and am wondering how I access that video. Is it not available yet?

    1. Joan Buttafuoco says:

Click on “My Account” and it’s under “My Purchased Videos.”

  2. I am wondering if this pattern is appropriate for cork. I want to use some beautiful cork that I purchased recently.

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Marjorie, I have seen several people make it in cork; you can see the tester bags here (one person that tested it made it in cork): https://sewsweetness.com/2022/05/blazingstar-bag.html
