Chickadee Backpack

I really love backpacks, and my initial goal with the Chickadee Backpack was to possibly have a backpack that could also serve as a diaper bag (or certainly a schoolbag).

This backpack has plenty of room and multiple pockets for use as a school bag, every day bag, or baby gear knapsack. The top of the backpack secures with a zipper and opens wide thanks to the hidden metal frames.

All the bags are nice, but would love to know was one of these made out of jean fabric? tia

    1. sewsweetness says:

Hi Judy! Yes, LaToya did (above). She often makes projects with denim, and you can see more of her makes in our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/666461230100430/search/?q=latoya%20wilmot-brown Thank you!

Hi Sarah and Danny. Can you please let me know if this Chickadee pattern is Beginner and domestic machine friendly. Also, can this be made out of cotton fabrics – lined with SF101and what else, maybe some fusible fleece or foam. Thank you

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Dorothy! All of my patterns can be made on a home sewing machine, although machines that can handle a lot of layers are a plus for any bag. 🙂 Yes, you can make your bag out of quilting cotton, as that’s what I made my bag with. You can find the supply list near the top of this blog post. If you are a beginner, I highly recommend purchasing the video as well as the pattern, so you can have the video to sew along with (or you can start with one of my easier projects, such as the Baker Street Bag: https://sewsweetness.com/2017/12/new-free-video-baker-street-bag.html). Thank you!

  3. Sally says:

    Hi Sara
This bag and its features are exactly what I am looking for to make a bag for crochet/knitting.
I would omit the back straps, and am wondering if bag would be okay if the top casing, zip and frames were also omitted. It looks like it would still “sit” fine. I want a bag that is wide open at the top. (I am also considering adding a drawstring closure).
    Thanks
    Sally

    1. Sara Lawson says:

HI Sally! This bag won’t have quite the same look without the zipper and metal frames (it would be more of a tote bag shape), but if that’s what you were looking for for your project, it would be perfectly find to omit the backpack straps. Thank you!

  4. Sally says:

Thanks Sara. Yes I want a tote bag shape, but love the bag overall. I will also have the pattern to make a backpack in the future (I love the unique top with the frame).

  5. Lori says:

Has anyone made this bag with cork or vinyl? Would waterproof or water resistant canvas work for the lining?
