Purse Palooza 2015 at Sew Sweetness
Hi everyone, Svetlana of s.o.t.a.k handmade here. Bags and pouches are my most favorite thing to sew, so when Sara asked if I wanted to make and review a bag of my choice for Purse Palooza I was more than happy to say yes right away. And then I couldn’t decide which pattern to review, of course, since there are so many great ones out there. After changing my mind a gazillion times I finally settled on making Aster Wristlet by Michelle Patterns.
I made quite a few pouches using Michelle’s patterns over the years and every time I’m impressed with her clear, easy to understand and follow detailed instructions and great in progress photos. Aster Wristlet, I’m happy to say, was no exceptions. Instructions were clear, photos helpful and once finished, my wristlet looked as lovely as I had hoped when I started making it.
I used a combination of Robert Kaufman Railroad Denim and Alice in Wonderland Liberty of London for my wristlet. While Michelle used the same fabric for both main body as well as the flap of her wristlet and only a little bit of contrasting fabric for the tab, I felt it would be a great shame to hide all this Alice cuteness inside the pouch, so I used it for the flap instead.

Finished size of this wristlet is 5.5″ high x 8″ wide x 2.5″ deep which I think is a great size for an everyday pouch. And, I really love the design with its straight sides and triangular gusset, …

… and pockets. I love pockets, especially zipper ones. Plus, these zipper pockets weren’t even that fiddly to install. I think an advanced beginner would be able to make this wristlet quite comfortably.

The only problem I had during the whole process was the thickness of my tab. I used fusible fleece as directed, but the tab finished too thick for my heavy duty snaps, so I had to improvise and went with velcro instead. I will skip fusible fleece next time and use one extra layer of SF101 interfacing instead. I’m pretty sure that will do the trick as I like the look of snaps a lot better than velcro.

All in all, this was a fun and pretty quick wristlet to sew and I highly recommend you give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.
