Purse Palooza 2015 at Sew Sweetness

For this review I sewed the Cat Pouch by Kristin / Woolly Petals. The pouch is Kristin’s first purse pattern and it’s totally adorable. You can find it on Craftsy.

When I first saw the Cat Pouch I knew I had to make it for myself. It’s so adorable! Kristin has been making sweet animal themed purses and pouches for a while now, and I’m glad she released this as a pattern.
The pattern calls for very little fabric – 1/4 yd of two coordinating fabrics and scraps for the rest! You’ll need a zipper (I used a plastic coil zip), and you’ll also need about a yard of lightweight fusible interfacing (I used Pellon SF 101). The strap and strap hardware are optional – but are the perfect addition if you’re making it for a sweet little one!
The construction of this pouch was really simple. Having basic zipper sewing skills is helpful, but isn’t necessary. I had never sewn an inset zipper before, and I really liked this method. I can see many other uses for this sort of zipper. The overall construction was very stress free. Beginners shouldn’t be afraid of this one!
For added cuteness the pattern uses scraps of felt to form the cat’s eyes and nose. I instead chose to use scraps of sparkle vinyl I had left over from previous projects (sparkle pouches!). The vinyl was easy to sew, and I used a denim needle and a Teflon coated presser foot to make the process easier. If you do use vinyl just remember not to use your iron in those areas!! I also used a bit of Pellon Wonder Under on the back of the ear pieces and the face accent piece. I fused them down using the Wonder Under before stitching around them.
This pattern was a really fun project to sew. It took just a couple hours, and it was very low stress. There is so much cute factor considering how quick and easy it went together!! I would say not to worry too much about it – pull out your pretty cat colored scraps and sew up a quick little purse for the young kid in your life (or yourself!).
I think it’s clear from the pictures that my daughter was thrilled that this little kitty pouch is hers to keep. She has named the cat pouch Olivia.
