Warm Cool Amy Butler Quilt

So I completely finished my quilt for the Warm Cool Quilt Along over at In Color Order! I used fabrics from Amy Butler’s Soul Blossoms line (and threw in a couple other random pink Amy Butler fabrics to equalize my warms and cools).

I used 4.5″ half square triangles that I had left over from another project. That pleased me very much as I didn’t have to cut any fabrics out for this quilt! I used Soft and Bright batting, and the backing fabric that I cut from a Pottery Barn twin-sized pink bed sheet that I bought at the thrift store for less than $1. I didn’t use binding for this quilt; instead, after quilting it, I just cut the batting down to the same size as the quilt top. The backing I trimmed 1.5″ larger than the quilt. I pressed that 1.5″ in half, and then folded it over one more time, mitering the corners. So much easier than sewing on binding! I like it! I think this will work for a lot of future quilts, since I have been using thrifted sheets, and it’s easy enough to just fold over (and I don’t mind that the binding isn’t a different fabric than the back).

Here’s a photo of the back of the quilt so you can see how I quilted it. I really like this design, and it does make the diamond shape on the top of the quilt really pop out!

My 4-year-old son, William, helped me take some of these pictures…didn’t he do a great job?! I loved making this quilt, and I guess I finally decided to just use it as a wall hanging. I agreed with some of the previous comments that it was too nice to use for a rug.

I was really glad to be able to participate in this quilt along; Jeni wrote some really great tutorial posts and had some amazing graphic illustrations for the quilt assembly. I think it’s so cool how visible the quilt design is when pairing the warm and cool fabric. Happy 4th of July!

Looks fantastic! I like how your quilting looks on the back, and you’re right, it really makes the diamonds stand out on the front as well. And yes, definitely too nice for a rug!

It’s awesome! It’s one of the nicest warm/cool quilts I’ve seen. Love the Amy Butler. And your son rocks! I’m waiting for my kids to get home from jazz camp to hold up a quilt for me.

  10. Love it! I’ve only ever done binding the way you described, it’s incredibly easy that way! I’ve had quilting gurus give me disgusted looks when I describe the process, apparently it isn’t the “right” way to do binding. But who cares? I think it looks good and it saves me a lot of time. I’m glad to see someone else doing the same!
