I Must Be Crazy – 3 In Progress

Dresden Plate in Echino fabrics laid out for Lily’s Quilts quilt along.

I don’t often post works in progress. I don’t know why. But I feel like I need to because I got myself into some serious mess, and I’ve been stalled out on sewing the past few days of it, so I thought maybe posting about my works-in-progress would help get me back on track.

Right now, I’m in the beginning stages of 3 different quilts. Yes. THREE. This has never happened to me before. I’ll admit, I’ve been working on a quilt and took a day or two break to finish up a small project (a bag, clothes, etc.). I don’t know how this happened.

Assembled circles for quilt tutorial.

#1: I wrote a tutorial for a symmetrical circle quilt. I’ve made 35 circles of main fabrics and sewn them down onto four different colors of Kona solids. The quilt top is 3/4 of the way finished, but I put it to the side when I came across project #2.

#2: Dresden Plate quilt along with Lily’s Quilts. I’m using the Echino scraps from project #1 to make four dresden blocks in the quilt-as-you-go method. That’s auf wedersehen to all my Echino fabrics. I have just about all the blades cut out at this point.

#3: Last week, I joined in the Bottled Rainbows quilt along at Stitched In Color. I’ve been seeing all the amazing blocks pop up on the Flickr group and I really wanted in. I’m still waiting for my Kona solids to arrive, so I haven’t really been able to do much, but I did start sorting my scraps into general color groupings (pink, yellow, blue, etc.). The good news is that this one is leisurely (until June).

Sorting scraps for Bottled Rainbows.

Maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. I don’t normally leave projects unfinished, because I’d probably never come back to them, lol. Any suggestions for pacing myself better?! 🙂

I’m not good at having multiple projects going at once either, I don’t know how some people do it. I think doing a regular work in progress post (there’s a weekly link up at Freshly Pieced) helps keep things on your mind & keep track of everything. My biggest problem is I make lists of stuff I’m working on or need to do, but then I never look at the list. If I actually have to write out the list every single week, I’m more likely to actually work on something!

That dresden plate looks great! I like the way the fabrics all work together, and even pieces that are cut from the same fabric can look completely different.

Mostly just keep yourself accountable for what you’re working on & you’ll get it all done! Sometimes having a little variety of what you’re working on is nice. I also bribe myself if there’s something I don’t particular want to work on by telling myself if I get so much done, I can work on something I’d rather be doing.

  2. Hi Sara,

I don’t think you’re crazy at all to have 3 projects going at once. I usually have between 5 and 10 in progress, more if you count knitting projects, too! Sometimes I get bored with one, or have a new idea, and just HAVE to start something new. As long as I have a list going, it usually all works out!
Have fun with your projects! The dresden plate is wonderful!

I love all the Echino projects! I just got some Echino fabrics for my birthday and have a number of ideas percolating… love how they look in the dresden plate you did!

I am definitely more of a one big project at a time person too, but I am sure you will get them all done!
