My New Sewing “Allowance”

Due to personal/family reasons, starting in February my fabric-buying options will be changing drastically. I am going to be able to spend $25 A MONTH on sewing supplies. That not only includes fabric, but thread, interfacing, zippers…you name it. Right about now I wish I had a huge fabric stash to fall back on, haha! I am going to do my best to make my small stash, which I previously showed pictures of here, last for a loooong time.

Perhaps I can chronicle what I spent my $25 on each month, to help me keep on track and maybe to inspire others who are working on their own fabric diets.

Maybe I can start repurposing fabric from thrift store linens. Any other tips to help me get the most bang for my buck?

This is probably a good thing. I wholeheartedly admit that I need some sort of limit set because no matter what I tell myself, when I see some gorgeous fabrics or get an idea for a project, all my limitations go out the window. I am thankful that we don’t have any credit cards, since we paid ours off a couple years ago. I have little to no self-restraint. I just didn’t realize my ‘allowance’ would be so low, lol!

Thank goodness I was able to fire off an order on a fat quarter bundle of the above pictured Anna Maria Horner Little Folks fabrics (which I’m splitting with my friend, Kim) this week. 😉

  1. Oh man, that’s rough! I’m in the same boat over here – the husband and I had a major talk about finances last night and agreed to put our cards away for awhile and use the cash system. Time to get creative!
But that’s a gorgeous bundle you’ve got coming your way, and I think it would be very interesting to document what you spend your 25$ on each month!

Thrift store linens are a great way to stretch your money. I have been able to buy some beautiful sheets & curtains that work great for various projects.

I’m sorry I don’t have other great tips. I’m trying to put myself on a crafting diet, too, and finding it tough every time I see all of the new fabrics available. On the positive side, I have much less fabric that I have to find somewhere to store which is very nice!

You can do it! I often find great bundles of cheap fabric at our Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc…And remember to pick your days for going to Joann’s or whatever shop you go to for coupon spending! I would love to follow along with this, what a great challenge! I have been having a lot of guilt about how much money I spend, considering we don’t have any debt, I don’t want to put us back into it again through my fabric binging! It would be kind of fun actually…. 🙂 You should start a $25 dollar a month budget-a-thon! 🙂 I would gladly add mine to my blog and it would be fun for all of us to compare notes every month!

I agree with Stehanie on the budget-a-thon bacause I am on a budget for my crafting and sewing also! We are remodeling the house and I don’t work so unless I can generate money to spend I am limited to $15 per month right now. 🙂 Really hard for me but I will make it.

You could totally do this!! You should also scout out garage sales, estate sales and swapmeets. I once got a bag full of vintage zippers in all sizes and colors for less than $4. I would totally follow a budget-a-thon!!
