Hi, I’m Emily from Mommy’s Nap Time, and I’m excited to share my mini quilt today. I love tiny intricate piecing, mini quilts, and zip pouches. I’m always working on several projects at once so be sure to stop back often!
I’m sharing the Jaybird Mini Disco quilt today. The quilt is right in my comfort zone since I love doing tiny precise piecing. However, I’m not usually a pattern follower, but I’m happy to say that the pattern for this quilt is super easy!
The Mini Disco pattern calls for the use of a 5″ charm pack, but I was not enthused about using the same fabrics as every other Mini Disco out there (there are so many of them made using the pre-cut solids from Kona). I worried about having to cut 30 charms in order to decide my own palate. In the end I decided to use a Tula Pink Jelly Roll (2.5″ strips) and some scraps. After a little bit of figuring, I realized I could use a 12″ section of each jelly roll strip, and trim it down to 1.5″ x 12″ (it would even be easy to use scraps from the scrap bin). The 12″ strips provided plenty of room to cut two half hexagons and four triangles. I used the Jaybird Quilts Mini Hex N More ruler to do this cutting.
After deciding on my layout I numbered some bits of masking tape to mark each piece.
The piecing was quick and precise especially considering that I’ve never pieced half hexagons before! I pressed all my seams open, I really enjoyed this tiny piecing. The piecing went quickly, the points were pretty accurate, and all the fabric requirements were spot on.
Once I had my mini quilted and ready to bind, I decided to use my normal method for binding completely by machine (tutorial here). I used 2.5″ bias strips instead of the 1.25″ in the pattern. I like a nice bulky, full binding. I did use Julie’s tips for binding 120 degree angles. Instead of sewing the back of the binding by hand I held it in place and stitched in the ditch from the front side of the quilt. I managed to miss only a tiny section even with all those angles!
I really enjoyed making this mini and I would recommend the pattern and ruler to anyone who likes a little bit of a challenge (or to anyone who, like me, enjoys the tiny piecing).
