Bags

Starling Bag

I love a bag that can feature a large-scale print or panel, and the Starling Bag is just the ticket! This bag also features unique side zippered pockets and an adjustable strap.

An online workshop is available to purchase for this pattern, watch the trailer below:

Online Workshop Length – 1 hour 25 minutes

This hobo bag has side zipper pockets on the exterior of the bag. A recessed zipper and a zipper pocket round out the lining. Make this bag in your favorite large-scale print or panel, or go with a solid for a classic look.

Finished Size: 13” long x 12” tall x 4” deep (33cm x 30cm x 10cm)

Supplies Needed to Make This Bag

  • 1 yard/metre of exterior fabric
  • 1 yard/metre of lining fabric
  • 1/2 yard/metre of fusible fleece
  • 3 yards/metres of 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or med-weight fusible interfacing)
  • 4” x 12” piece of Pellon #71 Peltex OR Decovil Heavy fusible interfacing
  • Four 14” handbag zippers (for side zippers, lining zipper pocket, and top zip closure) *if using zipper-by-the-yard,
  • Two 1-1/2” swivel clips do not cut until later on
  • 1-1/2” metal slider
  • Two 3/4” d-rings
  • Optional: 1-1/2 yards of 1-1/2” wide seatbelt webbing (directions are also given in the pattern instructions to make the strap out of the exterior fabric instead)

*Note: This pattern uses fusible fleece for the exterior fabric for a slouchy bag; however, if you would prefer a more structured bag, you can use foam interfacing instead of the fusible fleece.

The pdf pattern includes 14 pages of sewing instructions, complete with 42 step-by-step color photos. Also included in the PDF pattern are printable pattern pieces for your home printer. The following files will all be included with your PDF pattern purchase:

  • SVG Files (for electric cutting machines, such as the Brother Scan N Cut and the Cricut Maker)
  • Projector Files (for use with home projectors for cutting out fabric; please see the group Projectors for Sewing for more information)
  • A0 Files (large-format 33″ x 46″ pattern page for printing at your local copy shop, in case you would rather not tape together the pattern pages that are included in the PDF pattern)

Optional acrylic templates are available for this pattern, in case you’d like to quickly cut out the fabric and interfacing that are needed for the project. This is especially helpful for those that make and sell bags for craft fairs or Etsy shops.

Check out the beautiful work from my pattern testers. They worked really hard on their bags and each one is unique!
