Bags

Sky Harbor Tote

There’s a lot of options out there for pretty zippers and zipper pulls, and I wanted to design a bag that would feature zippers in a decorative way, so I came up with the Sky Harbor Tote!

An online workshop is available to purchase for this pattern, watch the trailer below:

Online Workshop Length – 1 hour 53 minutes

This tote bag showcases several interesting features, including hidden straps, decorative zippers along the sides of the bag, and the chance to use several different fabrics on the exterior of the bag. The lining contains a recessed zipper, zipper pocket, and a slip pocket. Lots of bag-making techniques are packed into this pattern!

Finished Size: 14” long x 12” tall x 4-1/2” deep (35.5cm x 30.5cm x 11.4cm)

SUPPLIES

  • 1/3 yard/metre of focal fabric for the center of the bag
  • 1/2 yard/metre of contrast fabric for the sides of the bag
  • 2/3 yard/metre of solid fabric for the straps and bottom
  • 1 yard/metre of lining fabric
  • 1/2 yard/metre of foam interfacing (By Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, Bosal In-R-Form, or auto
headliner; if using Flex Foam, it is only 20” wide so please purchase 1-1/2 yard)
  • 4 yards/metres of 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or med-weight fusible interfacing)
  • 1/4 yard/metre of Pellon #71 Peltex OR Decovil Heavy fusible interfacing
  • Three 12” handbag zippers (for side zippers and lining zipper pocket)
  • 18” handbag zipper (for top closure)

The pdf pattern includes 13 pages of sewing instructions, complete with 36 step-by-step color photos. Also included in the PDF pattern are printable pattern pieces for your home printer. The following files will all be included with your PDF pattern purchase:

  • SVG Files (for electric cutting machines, such as the Brother Scan N Cut and the Cricut Maker)
  • Projector Files (for use with home projectors for cutting out fabric; please see the group Projectors for Sewing for more information)
  • A0 Files (large-format 33″ x 46″ pattern page for printing at your local copy shop, in case you would rather not tape together the pattern pages that are included in the PDF pattern)

Optional acrylic templates are available for this pattern, in case you’d like to quickly cut out the fabric and interfacing that are needed for the project. This is especially helpful for those that make and sell bags for craft fairs or Etsy shops.

Thanks for this great pattern. I really enjoyed making the tote – it’s the perfect size to use as my new computer bag! The video was extremely helpful.
