The Kimono Sleeve Dress is a beginner friendly pattern that is a dream to sew. Easy kimono sleeves mean you don’t have to ease them in. The boatneck type neckline is finished with a simple facing. Loose fit with an elasticated waist for added shape. Make a beach kimono from printed silk, or try wool crepe and add a belt for a sophisticated office dress.
The Flounce Hem Dress is a shift dress with a feminine flounce detail at hem. The fit is comfortably semi-fitted with bust and back darts giving it shape. Slight boatneck shape at front neckline and a rounded back neckline. There is an invisible zipper at middle back seam. Neckline and armholes are finished with an all-in-one facing.
The Flounce top is an intermediate level summer top with a feminine flounce detail. The elastic waist makes it easy to fit perfectly for any size. Adjustable straps are tied at shoulders. Use any light to mid- weight fabric with drape. Neckline and armholes are finished with bias tape.
I would love to make a lot more handmade for myself, but I sew mostly for my daughter and have little sewing time (FTjob), so the few items I manage to make for myself are reallt well planned and needed, so they fit perfectly in my wardrobe items.
Actually many times i do because I make something I like with a print I like and it doesn’t always fit with what I have already
No, they are usually the centerpiece 🙂
At times, but as I make most of my wardrobe, it would be my own fault. Not all that coordinated in so many way!
Love bias patterns! Bias is my friend! (Lucille is actually Nancy, in case it matters)
I am.trying to make sure that things I make fit with everything else but inevitably as you add new things you find new gaps! But then you have more things to sew!
Louise
I tend to only make special occasion type garments right now, so they are definitely not for the everyday! I’d like to start making some more daily pieces.
I usually make dresses so there is no problem!
Not really.
I have no problem at all fitting my handmade items into my wardrobe. I don’t have an excessive amount of clothes (never enjoyed clothes shopping in the first place!) and generally make things that I desperately need. I haven’t been sewing for that long, but wear a lot of handmade clothes because I just don’t have that many clothes!
I don’t have any at the moment because I’m just getting back into sewing. Back when I made clothes, I had no problem fitting them into my wardrobe.
Sometimes if it’s a special occasion make, I have difficulty finding the right place to wear it again! otherwise, not so much!
I have mostly made special occasion and costume items so not everyday type wears. Hoping to start making more basics for our wardrobes.
I like to make casual clothes so it makes it easier for me to wear them everyday.
I love wearing what I make.
These patterns are perfect for the styles I like!
I don’t think I have trouble with encorporating my handmades in with the rest – I just wish I had more handmade and less rtw in my wardrobe. 😉
Fitting is definitely the hardest part for me.
not anymore. It was when I first learned to sew. but now I know my style better and I try to sew more things I wear on a daily basis (less summerdresses).
I struggle to know what will suit me best as I’ve lived in jeans and knit tops for so long!!
Yes, I do. I’m not very good at fitting. So I’ve had items sit in my drawer. Oh, well, thank you.
Not really. I sew for my dream wardrobe, and try to make my RTW purchases fit with the handmades.
I’ve been wanting to try Salme patterns for awhile, very clean and modern designs!
I am just starting to sew for myself again.
Yes. It seems every time I attempt to make clothing, it doesn’t dit right. These are cute patterns
Sometimes-only because I use a lot of crazy prints that end up not matching with anything!
I am just starting to sew for myself and am really trying to be selective when choosing fabric so they will be flattering and match other pieces!
Sometimes as I have not been very good at coordinating with what is already in my closet. But, I am trying to change that by being very deliberate with fabric and pattern choices.
I have a few patterns which work really well for my job as a teacher (Lady skater, hepworth, flora)…however I am often restricted by the weather as I find wearing tights with cotton makes the dress stick to my legs so prefer bare legs (particularly true for the hepworth which is my current go to pattern). Therefore I need to branch in to other patterns so this is a perfect giveaway!
I sometimes have trouble working in items that are crazy prints but I feel I’m much better at thinking about the item I’m making and how it will fit into my whole wardrobe and coordinate with other items I already have in my closet.
I think it is good to have a mix of things that do go well and things that are different and fun. I like mixing some basics with some of the more fun patterns too so that I am not looking too busy!
I do have a hard time incorporating handmade items. I am still earning how to sew so items hold up and selecting the right fabrics.
No, not really. Unless I don’t like how they turn out!
I have a lot of simple pants and skirts in boring basic colors, and what I like to sew is tops in wild prints, so it works out well.
I wear something I have made nearly every day!
I’ve only made myself one shirt so far (I have two little girls to sew for), and I wear it all the time!
Yes, if it’s a print and I can’t find something to match. Otherwise, I usually wear handmades all the time!
No, I love wearing things I have made. These patterns are great!
nope, not a problem.
Yes, I am still struggling to pinpoint my personal style, so even making things I will eventually wear is hard. But i’m getting there!
Love these patterns! I don’t have a problem working me-made clothing into my wardrobe. Finding time to make items for myself is another story!
Not really, I make things I want to wear so I fit them in
I don’t have too much trouble working things into my wardrobe unless I make something too dressy that I won’t wear very often!
I’m getting better at making things I really need, as opposed to things that are really neat but I don’t have much opportunity to wear!
No, I love wearing handmade, so I make every effort to make things that go together with the rest of my wardrobe.
Nope. I make it with the intention of wearing it and so far I haven’t tackled anything too fancy.
I have no problems encorporating my handmade a into every day wear. I just wish I had more time for making the handmades!
Nope. It feels weird to me to make something and not wear it, so I plan my makes to fit into my wardrobe.
I only make what I like to wear, so I don’t really have any problem working my handmade clothes into my wardrobe. I always make a muslin before cutting my real fabric, so if I don’t like the style lines, I ditch the project. I think that eliminates making things I wouldn’t wear.
I read a blogger’s comment that when she makes a skirt, she always make a top to go with it. So I try to coordinate the pieces ahead of time. Would love to try the Salme patterns. Thanks!
I struggle to make shirts! I can make the rest, but shirts hold me back.
I have a lot of pieces that don’t go with anything else. I’m working through Wardrobe Architect to remedy that.
Generally my handmade clothes stand out because they are prints! All my RTW is solid, and mostly neutral, so the gorgeous fabrics I can’t resist really stand out in my wardrobe.
Nope, I wear my handmade clothes all the time… sometimes even when they don’t match. :D:D
That flounce hem dress is so cute! I’d love to try making that!
Working me-mades in to my regular wardrobe has been going pretty well lately. I usually have ideas of how I’m going to wear something before I start making it.
No, not at all! A skirt here, a dress there!
Nope! I make mostly dresses, so they don’t require a lot.
Not at all. I make clothes that fit in with what I have
Sometimes when the item don’t fit properly
I tend to only make dresses and skirts, so when the occasion calls for pants or more active wear, it can be difficult!
Nope, I make a lot of tops and dresses, luckily I can wear them to work or on days off 🙂 x
No, if I made it I want to wear it all the time.
No – I tend to make dresses which are easy to layer with plain bought items
Sometimes yes and sometimes no. If I make it in a solid color I usually have no trouble!
I’m reworking my wardrobe so it’s fitting together better and my me-mades are the best parts of my wardrobe. I Still have holes and gaps though so things don’t quite fit together sometimes.
I don’t have problems incorporating handmade items into my wardrobe. I like doing “storyboarding” so getting all my fabric swatches and patterns together to make mix and match outfits with the staples I already own or making plans to purchase things to fill gaps in my wardrobe is actually quite exciting! The only thing I work on is making my handmade items look less—homemade.
Nope! Me Made Every Day!! Although I could use some more solid color basics because I tend to buy pretty prints all the time.
I go through spells where I make my own clothes and then get lazy and start buying them again. I’m buying now, so this would be a great incentive to start sewing again. Thanks so much for sharing
i love my handmades, but am sometimes guilty of “saving” them. As I make more I find myself wearing them more.
No problem at all, I mostly wear handmade, but I seriously need to sew some great fitting pants! Then my wardrobe will be complete! 🙂
I used to sew for myself and then for my daughters. I haven’t sewn for myself in years, but I think I could make one of the kimono sleeve dresses easily! A good place to start again.
I don’t have any trouble fitting my homemade items into my wardrobe. I don’t have a ton of them though, because I’m too lazy to do the muslins, but when I do make something that fits, I wear it out.
Oh awesome patterns! More to my list! I do have difficulty adding my handmade to my wardrobe. Sometimes I want to wear it all and other times- well let’s say my fabric pattern isn’t quite right.
I usually try to coordinate sewn pieces with my existing wardrobe.
I sew purses and tote bags, so it’s not hard using my handmade items.
Yes! I keep making dresses but I hardly ever wear dresses (yes, I am clearly dumb!). The bags always work well though 🙂
I don’t sew too much for myself currently but am working on changing that. I have one handmade dress and I wear it frequently.
This books is just what I need. My summer wardrobe definitely needs an upgrade.
Actually, I have a hard time finding nice fabric at an affordable price for my makes. But I’m slowly getting to a point where I have enough me-made items in my wardrobe that I can wear every day
I Only have some casual clothes so they are easy to fit in. Nothing to take to work….
I don’t have any trouble fitting in most of my makes, but now and again I “gift” a thrift store with a brand new me-made item!
I generally wear me made about 3 times a week. Me made May helped me incorporate more and I only repeated one top this month so far! I’m learning what I need and trying to sew more of that so I can wear more handmade regularly.
I would love to try some Salme patterns! I love wearing handmade items and I try really hard to make things I will wear, as well as pretty things. When I first started garment sewing, I made lots of pretty party dresses, and they would just hang in my closet. Now I make Archers and Gingers and wear them all the time 🙂
I typically sew for my kids but when I do sew for me, I usually make either a skirt or a top, and never both together. As a result, I can sometimes struggle to mix and match things with them!
I do make party dresses, but typically for occasions I have in mind. Otherwise, I try to stay fairly utilitarian, even if utilitarian for me is full skirts and vintage blouses!
I don’t have a difficult time working them into my wardrobe, though I’d love to make a wardrobe in which there’d be more mix and match pieces!
I have a hard time wearing anything other than me-made!
No, it always feels great wearing handmade!
Yes! bc the fun items to sew aren’t the ones I wear everyday.
Not really. My handmade items are usually in a style I’d normally wear. Its more a matter of how “good” they are.
Most of them I wear a lot, but sometimes it doesn’t work out and I don’t like it very much.
I am new to garments sewing. It is so hard to choose the right patterns and the right fabrics that would work with the rest of my wardrobe. I just want to sew everything that looks pretty, and then incorporate it into my wardrobe.
I do – but I have trouble matching store bought clothes too, so I’m not blaming the stuff I make, I just have trouble making a cohesive wardrobe period!
I feel like lately I only wear clothing I have made (plus store bought jeans) so everything goes.
I don’t really have issues with it, I try to pick patterns and fabrics and ideas that do incorporate into my wardrobe and go well with other items I already have. But sometimes I do run into issues when I pick fabric that I absolutely fell in love with but the color just plain does not suit me, or if I picked a style of the item that I loved on paper but just does not look good on me, or once I hemmed a skirt too long and couldn’t figure out for a year what it was about it that I didn’t like. I am still learning what exactly it takes for an item to be fully incorporated and wearable, but I am definitely better than I was at the start 🙂
I am trying to make more and more of my own wardrobe each year. These patterns look like good basic wardrobe builders.
Yes. I make too many casual pieces and not enough work wear. I am working on my skills to be able to create work wear.
I’ve been busting out garments made by moi all week! It is so great! Your blog has inspired me: seeing what others are doing, being introduced to so many patterns. I sewed 2 skirts last weekend and a short sleeved Linden sweatshirt. Thanks for this Dress Up Party!!!
