My Sewing Area

Looking for the Echino Giveaway?

My sewing machine next to the computer…why some days I don’t get a whole lot done!

My friend Emily inspired me to take a look at my sewing area organization when she wrote a guest post on the topic. So I threw away the millions of fabric scraps and threads cluttering my work area and took some pictures for you. 🙂

I store my fabric stash in plastic containers under the desk.

I live in Chicago, where space is generally at a premium. So I share a tiny work area room with my husband and his gaming computer desk. I basically have my desk area and then an ironing board almost directly behind my chair. That’s it, but I sort of like the tight space (although, I don’t know any better) because it lets me be efficient when sewing/pressing.

My entire fabric stash. I really need to show my husband everyone else’s stash that I have been seeing lately so he will understand that I am really lacking in inventory. 🙂

I have seen some magnificent stash shots so far this year. I am amazed at the fabric collection that some people have! And perhaps a little wistful. But I think I can be honest in the fact that 75% of the time when I am thinking about a new project, I am also thinking about what fabrics to purchase for that project, so I suppose it is good to have a small stash.

I keep my fabric scraps in a large hatbox. Since I started quilting, I now realize the importance of scraps.

The only thing that I would ask for if I had a larger work area would be a design wall where I could also hang quilt layers against the wall so I could spray baste them there. I’ve never tried basting off the wall, but I did see a video on YouTube about it and it did look pretty awesome.

My sewing pattern box.

I hope you’ve liked this little glimpse into my sewing area. I suppose my work area probably tells you a little something about myself, although I’m not sure what that would be exactly. 🙂

Doesn’t it feel good to get rid of some of that clutter?! I’m impressed with your stash…I have realized that mine is *too* big (it is possible!) and needs to be pared down a bit.

    Woo hoo for Chicago!
I often feel like I could buff up my stash, but then I don’t feel like I could let myself by new fabric for every project.

Looks great! I have a similar situation, my iron is directly next to my machine. It works.

Your stash is pretty awesome compared to mine! lol. I think I have two fq bundles and a couple yards of other stuff. I usually do buy fabric for the project at hand. Especially solids, I’m always out of grey (joann’s loves me). 🙂

I know I have far too much stash and right now it’s actually upsetting me more than making me smile when looking at it. So yea, don’t be too jealous. I will be fine once I get the newest purchases over the past few months put away and the other junk that doesn’t even belong in my sewing room, much less on my cutting table OUT! The best thing I’ve found to help me organize though is visiting my favorite store which means a drive into Schaumburg to pick up more storage containers from The Container Store. I LOVE that store. ALL my sewing stuff in stored in their containers which is great since they all stack wonderfully on each other.

I wonder in your room do you have enough space to store a piece of plywood behind your table? You could probably ‘build’ the wall you want onto a piece of plywood and then store it behind your table pulling it out when you want to use it. That way it’s a portable wall and if you had a lot of spraying, you could even take it outside to spray preventing any overspray from getting onto your machines or desk.

I like your little sewing area a lot. I always attempt to be organized and then it quickly falls apart. I have a little “craft” room… it’s supposed to be a spare bedroom, but all it has in the way of a bed is a twin sized sleeper sofa. That worked okay until I bought my new sewing machine last year. Since then I’ve been working on the kitchen table. *sigh*

I really like the pattern box and I am thinking I will have to pick one of those up since my patterns are in various spots right now.

I love the pattern for the covers.

I wanted to ask how did you do your website…did you design it yourself or do you go through a company? Is there cost involved?
