Opossum Bag

Once in awhile, a pattern is a personal challenge to myself. To come up with a unique shape, or to figure out how something fits together. With the Opossum Bag, my personal challenge was to design a pattern that didn’t use hardware (besides a magnetic snap!) or zippers but still looked interesting.

An online workshop is available to purchase for this pattern, watch the trailer below:

Online Workshop Length – 1 hour 18 minutes

This bag features a diagonal pocket across the front and back of the bag. While the pieces are large, there are minimal pieces to cut out, and no zippers or hardware required (except for a magnetic snap!).

Finished Size: 14” long x 16” tall x 5” deep (35cm x 40cm x 13cm)

Supplies Needed to Make This Bag

  • 1-1/3 yard/metre of exterior fabric (thick fabrics should be avoided for this particular pattern)*
*if you would prefer to use 2 different fabrics for your exterior, you will need 2/3 yards each of 2 fabrics
  • 1-1/2 yard/metre of lining fabric
  • 1/2 yard/metre of solid fabric for the strap
  • 2/3 yard/metre of foam interfacing (By Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, Bosal In-R-Form, or automotive headliner; if using Flex Foam, it is only 20” wide so please purchase 1-1/4 yard)
  • 4-3/4 yard/metre 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or med-weight fusible interfacing)
  • 1 yard/metre of Pellon P44F or PLF36 Lightweight Fusible non-woven interfacing (or other non-woven interfacing)
  • Three 1/2” magnetic snaps

Note: This pattern uses foam interfacing for a structured bag; however, if you would prefer a slouchier bag, which also lends itself well to the style of this bag, you can use Pellon Thermolam (or equivalent interfacing) instead of the foam interfacing. Thermolam will also be easier on your machine. If using Thermolam instead, you will need 1-1/4 yards. If using faux leather, vinyl, etc. for your exterior fabric, it is recommended that you use Pellon Thermolam instead of foam.

The pdf pattern includes 10 pages of sewing instructions, complete with 27 step-by-step color photos.

Also included in the PDF pattern are printable pattern pieces for your home printer. The following files will all be included with your PDF pattern purchase:

  • SVG Files (for electric cutting machines, such as the Brother Scan N Cut and the Cricut Maker)
  • Projector Files (for use with home projectors for cutting out fabric; please see the group Projectors for Sewing for more information)
  • A0 Files (large-format 33″ x 46″ pattern page for printing at your local copy shop, in case you would rather not tape together the pattern pages that are included in the PDF pattern)

Thank you to Chera Phipbody for the lovely Opossum Bag photos.

And you can find the Opossum Bag pattern and video now in my shop.

Check out the beautiful work from my pattern testers. They worked really hard on their bags and each one is unique!
