I really love backpacks, and with the Marlin Backpack, I created a 3-dimensional shape with the front of the bag (similar to the Zeppelin Pouch or Connemara Pouch). The front zippered portion is perfect for a focal print or panel print.
An online workshop is available to purchase for this pattern, watch the trailer below:
Online Workshop Length – 2 hours 23 minutes
This backpack comes in 2 different sizes and features front and optional side pockets, plus plenty of storage space in the main compartment. Size small is a great size for a purse or small backpack, and size large will fit a standard-sized notebook.
Finished Size:
- size small – 11” long x 11-1/2” tall x 6” deep (28cm x 29cm x 15.cm)
- size large – 13” long x 14” tall x 6-1/2” deep (33cm x 35.5cm x 16.5cm)
Supplies Needed to Make One Backpack
- 1 yard/metre of exterior fabric for size small OR 1-1/4 yard/metre of exterior fabric for size large
- 1 yard/metre of lining fabric for size small OR 1-1/4 yard/metre of exterior fabric for size large
- 3/4 yard/metre of foam interfacing (By Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, Bosal In-R-Form, or automotive headliner; if using Flex Foam, it is only 20” wide so please purchase 2 yards)
- 4 yard/metre 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or med-weight fusible interfacing)
- Optional: 1/2 yard/metre of Pellon Peltex #71 or Decovil Heavy (for a firm Front Pocket and Bottom; possible for either size small or large, but may be appreciated for size large; also to stabilize the Strap Overlay on back of bag)
- Two handbag zippers: 24” for size small OR 30” for size large
(either single-pull or double-pull zippers will work; I used double-pull zippers) - 12” zipper
- Two 1” metal rectangles
- Two 1” metal sliders
- If you would like to use webbing instead of fabric for your straps, you will need 2-1/2 yards of 1” wide webbing
