Sewing Machine Travel Bag

The Sewing Machine Travel Bag is a beautiful way to handcraft something special for your sewing machine workhorse. Here are some views of my bags, as well as the beautiful pattern testers’ photos, to give you inspiration for your next project!

An online workshop is available to purchase for this pattern, watch the trailer below:

Online Workshop Length – 3 hours 38 minutes

This travel bag is specifically made to hold your sewing machine. Side mesh pockets provide extra storage space for large items, and the front zippered pocket will hold your thread, notions, and other small items. The Samsonite Compact Folding Luggage Cart makes it easy to carry a sewing machine of any weight!

The pdf pattern includes 23 pages of sewing instructions, complete with 68 step-by-step color photos. Also included in the PDF pattern are printable pattern pieces for your home printer. The following files will all be included with your PDF pattern purchase:

  • Projector Files (for use with home projectors for cutting out fabric; please see the group Projectors for Sewing for more information)
  • A0 Files (large-format 33″ x 46″ pattern page for printing at your local copy shop, in case you would rather not tape together the pattern pages that are included in the PDF pattern)

This bag features a unique, sling-style handle (just a single handle) that threads its way on the wrong side of the bag, hidden from view. Two layers of handle go underneath the bottom of the bag, allowing you to carry your heavy sewing machine without damaging the bag. The handle slides through the handle openings as needed to adjust to the weight.

Finished Size: for sewing machines 17” x 14” x 9” and smaller (43cm x 35.5cm x 23cm)
(finished size is 19-1/2” long x 15” tall x 11” deep) (49.5cm x 38cm x 28cm)

IMPORTANT: When measuring your sewing machine, make sure to take into account the thread holder at its lowest setting and any portions of the machine that stick out from the main portion.

Katie Baker has prepared a pattern hack in order to make your Sewing Machine Travel Bag into a longer bag! Please click here to see Katie’s instructions. Thank you Katie!

You can find the Sewing Machine Travel Bag pattern and video now in my shop.

Thank you to all of the lovely pattern testers for their hard work! Please check out their gorgeous bags!

    Sara,
I bought this pattern a week ago. It looks great and I’m super excited to start on it soon. I’m starting to plan the build, I want to make a few modifications.
    – I want to build a “drawer” under the machine, where I can store some tackle boxes for my sewing tools
    – I’d love to have the zipper open totally to the front, so I can load the machine from the front (I have a Janome Skyline S7 and it’s pretty heavy).
I think I can manage on my own, but I’d love any advice you can give. I’ll have to make some changes with how the straps are run.
    Thanks!

Hello Roberto! Perhaps you could combine the Sewing Machine Travel Bag pattern with the Cavalcade Bag in order to get the zipper section at the bottom. Unfortunately I don’t have any ideas on making the bag front-loading – perhaps adding a zippered flap similar to the Binary Pouch from Minikins Season One but I’m not sure. The “sling” strap function is fairly important to the bag in order to carry all that weight safely. Thank you!

Thanks, that gives me some ideas, I was thinking for the “drawer” portion something like this (not as high of course) https://d1qmdf3vop2l07.cloudfront.net/alter-quetzal.cloudvent.net/hash-store/2663a870757d7002f20ed31aa828a633.jpg
I’m thinking of the straps in the sling going in between the drawer section and the machine section, so they’ll take the weight of the machine, but not of the bottom, and at the same time not interfere with the front zipper.
The drawer section I’m going to build a box out of hard plastic that will be able to take the weight of the machine.
And yeah, something like the binary pouch is what I was thinking, the straps would still be inside that section, so the functionality would be the same.

Hi Sara, I’m about ready to start buying the materials for this bag. I was thinking of this vinyl for the outside, in a combination of black and brown (https://www.fabricwholesaledirect.com/products/dotted-stretch-vinyl-fabric?variant=29415189151859&gclid=Cj0KCQiA0MD_BRCTARIsADXoopbFIASrUMOnisVOU7Vng4eZKfHP47lNLLghqlvlkR98E1aBUUOY53QaAs-eEALw_wcB).
What I’m not so sure is what fabric to use for the lining, and the supplies also request 2/3 yards of solid fabric, which I’m not sure where it goes, what do you suggest for that?
      Thanks again!

Hey… it only took me a year and a half, but I just finished it! Note the bottom hard plastic drawer that allows me to put in fish-tackle boxes for all the sewing stuff. Because my machine is significantly bigger, and I added the extra part for the bottom drawer, the case was quite floppy, I inserted some corrugated plastic on the sides and back to give it more structure and I’m quite happy with the way it came out.

How did you add that bottom compartment?

      1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Paul! The bottom is a purchased Samsonite Luggage Carrier. Thank you!

Hi Sara. I have been looking for a travel bag for my ScanNCut DX. None of the Cricut bags are long enough to fit the DX. I think I can adjust this pattern to be about 22” long, 12” high, and 10” wide (deep). I’ll adjust the pockets accordingly. Do you think it will work?

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Karen! There’s a pattern hack for adapting the Sheffield Tool Bag for the Cricut; perhaps a modification to that would work for your Scan N Cut? https://www.facebook.com/groups/sewsweetnessfans/permalink/2821984741214724
