Here is a brand new bag pattern and video for the Oriole Bag! This project is available in 2 different sizes, small or large. You can make this bag in the material of your choice (I made one version in cotton fabric and another in cork fabric). The bag comes together quickly in just 23 steps and uses front and back fabrics that creatively form a 3-dimensional bag using darts. The video for this project is 50 minutes long and shows the entire project from start to finish.

If you have an electric cutting machine, such as the Cricut Maker, you can find SVG Files for this pattern here: Oriole Bag – SVG Files
What you’ll need for this project:
- 3/4 yard of exterior fabric (1/2 yard will be enough if using 54” wide cork or vinyl)
- 1/2 yard of lining fabric
- 1/2 yard of foam interfacing (By Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, Bosal In-R-Form, or automotive headliner; if using Flex Foam, it is only 20” wide so please purchase at least 1 yard)
- 2 yards of 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or medium-weight fusible)
- Twist lock or 1/2” magnetic snap (find them at Emmaline Bags)
- Two 1” metal rectangles
- 1” metal slider
Other supplies that I used during the video:
- fabric glue (I used Beacon 3-1 glue; Fabric-Tac would also work great!)
- Seam Wacker
- Fasturn tool
- Precision Turning Tool
- Clover Chaco pen
- Frixion pen
I made the large version of the bag using Cork Fabric (the color is Candy Red), and the small version of the bag using fabrics from Cotton+Steel (the lining in the large bag is also Cotton+Steel).
I can’t wait to see your finished bag! Make sure you post a photo of your project in my Facebook Group!
Hi Sara,

Where would the link to the PDF file be?
I love this pattern!! I so look forward to making it, because it is such a beautiful pattern. Thanks so much Sara for this nice treat!!!!!
Dear Sara,
thank you for the new pattern, I immediately wanted to make it…have the perfect faux leather just waiting to be an Oriole Bag! Unfortunately, I can’t get the pattern printed out properly…never had this problem with your patterns before. If I print in “actual size”, I get an error message from my printer (actually just tried it on several printers at work) and if I ignore that and let it print on A4 paper the left and right margins are cut of. I’m just guessing that you made this for standard US letter size which is probably different from A4 we use here in Europe.
Any idea how to solve this?
Thanks,
Dana
I discovered that I had to print a pattern on my printer. The copy machine always gave me an error message, also.
Thanks Sara for the pattern. Will definitely try this. Its a wonderful bag.
Thank you so much for this pattern. I really love the way this bag looks.
Thank you for this cute patter! I am making it in “pear” green with enviroleather!! Going together great so far! Just making tabs for rectangle rings at the moment! I chose a heart shaped turn lock which I hate putting in, so much fuss, but it looks great! Hope to finish it tomorrow!!
I can’t wait to see it!!
Thank you Sara! Looks great.
Thanks Daryl!
Thanks Sara, these will be great for my new summer fabrics! I love the smaller gal, both are adorable for this bag lady!
What a great pattern. I have the afternoon free so I think I’m going to get in my sewing room and make this. Thanks so much! Quick question for you. What kind of iron do you use and do you like it?
Hi Diana! I have a Singer Expert Finish iron. Several years ago, I reviewed several irons for the website Sew Mama Sew. This one was my favorite (and cheaper than many of the other irons I reviewed). I still have it to this day (and bought 2 more to use at my retreats!).
where I can download the pattern?
OMG! You are an excellent sewer. So precise! Loved it.
Thanks for the free pattern – it is very generous of you. Just watched the video. Great job. Hopefully will get around to making it soon. If I do I will post a picture.
Thanks Sara! I enjoy making my first Oriole bag and I guess I will make many more
Thanks Angie, can’t wait to see your finished bag!

Thank you Fitria, so happy that you are enjoying the pattern!
As a child I was told, that I never will be good in sewing (crafting) and even 9 years ago I couldn
t sow a bag with zipper. Can’t thank you enough for your excellent tuturials and wonderful patterns. You enriched my life.
Corinna, never let anyone tell you what you cannot do! I am so glad that you have found sewing!
I have never made a bag before so this will be my first! Could I possibly put an outside pocket on the bag?
Hello Shannon! You may find this video helpful for that! https://sewsweetness.com/2018/02/video-add-zipper-pocket-bag.html
Hi, A thought with this bag, having a flatter back it would make an awesome girls bike rack saddle bag x 2 that you can easily clip together with shorter straps of the bike rack & then use with a longer strap at your destination.
Oh that’s a fantastic idea!!
So cute! Thank you for sharing.
Gosh, you make it so easy for beginners! Thank you so much for all the detailed instructions and free patterns and tutorials.

So happy that you enjoyed the pattern Branka! Have a beautiful day!
Hi, Sara. This is such a lovely bag. Thank you for the pattern and clear video tutorial. I’m wondering if there are any other changes (besides the small tabs and strap) to make to the pattern or construction if using cork. Thank you again!
Love the bags, what size is the smaller one please.
Hello Doreen, size small is 12″ long x 8″ tall x 2″ deep and size large is 14″ long x 9-1/2″ tall x 3″ deep. Thank you!
Thank you for this pattern and especially the tutorial since this is all new to me.
I love this professional looking bag. I can’t wait to make it. Thanks for the video that I can watch again if I get stuck.
