Satellite Bag

I love a medium sized bag, and I tried to pack a lot of interesting details into the new Satellite Bag Video+PDF sewing pattern, while still making this bag a relatively quick and easy sew.

This bag measures 11″ long x 10″ high x 3-3/4″ deep. It features a zippered flap, 3-dimensional front pocket, magnetic zipper closure, and there are two different kinds of pocket in the lining, an accordion pocket and a zippered pocket.

I made one version in Tula Pink ‘De la Luna’ fabrics, which are gorgeous colors, and I got lucky enough to find a zipper for the flap, that was really close in color to the fabric.

Are there any views of the inside? This looks like a great pattern.

  2. Keri says:

Is there a way to make the flap zippers open the other way? It seems like I could turn the zipper pulls around but I know that’s not easy.

Hi Keri! Not sure what you mean – let me know and I’m happy to help! Thank you!

I’d like to be able to open the flap pocket with the bag still in my shoulder so the zipper pulls would need to open from near the seam where the flap meets the bag, instead of opening from the middle of the flap as it appears in the photo. Is it possible to set the zipper in to open that way?

        1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Keri! You could make a zipper pocket about 4″ below the straight edge of the flap (and sew the flap right sides together instead of having a zipper inserted in the curved edge).

That was my suggestion, Even one or two inches down would work. You could even put a pocket inside THAT pocket!!!!!

    Hi Sara,
I really want those exact fabric colors and all and the matching zippers as well. Are those available to you and if not could you give me the info so I can get on with making this bag please.
Thank you so much! Big HUGS!!!!

Hi Rhonda! I sell the Tula Pink fabric on my website (there is a tab under Shop for ‘Tula Pink Fabric’) and we also sell the zippers under the ‘Notions’ tab. Hope this helps!

I really like this bag, and I think it would suit my needs, if only it were just a bit smaller. Do you know if anyone has tried printing the pattern pieces at a reduced size, so that the finished bag is, say, 20 percent smaller than the original design? Can you think of any pitfalls I might encounter if I try that? Of course I would have to reduce the lengths of the zippers by 20 percent as well. I am an experienced seamstress so I think I could pull it off…. 🙂 Any thoughts? Thank you.

P.S. I am also thinking of dispensing with the flap zipper and instead using the entire back panel as a zippered pocket (for stashing my 8-inch tablet), and thus probably also dispense with the inside zippered pocket on the front size. And I might see if I can figure out a way to divide that front pocket into two compartments, for phone and keys. Perhaps I could do that by making the outside panel in one piece, as in the original design, but somehow working a divider gusset into the inside…. Any thoughts on how that might be accomplished? Thanks.

This is a nice bag but it isn’t deep enough for me. I find that is pretty much the case with all the bags I purchase and patterns I look at. I’d like a 6″ deep bag so everything fits inside nicely.
