Starting the Summer Sampler

I finally got started on my Summer Sampler 2017 quilt along blocks! This is a quilt along that is hosted by Freshly Pieced, Fresh Lemons Quilts, and Swim Bike Quilt. If you’re interested in seeing the full sampler quilt and the blocks that are included, you can find them here.

I opted to go with a Kona black background fabric for the quilt, and decided that each block would be a different color of the rainbow. Here’s my Block 1, the Millcreek Star.

The Tilted Star is up for Block 2, and it combines both traditional piecing and foundation paper-piecing (although the very simplest of foundation paper-piecing blocks). I used Aurifil 50wt thread for piecing.

My daughter is 8 and she occasionally asks to sew. She wanted to make a quilt block, but initially I didn’t think that she could manage any of these blocks so I told her to piece some charm squares together. She asked again, so I figured what the heck. I rotary cut all of the required pieces of fabric for her, but she sewed everything together herself. She seemed to really enjoy the foundation paper-piecing part. She was really excited to create the layout for this photograph and for her block to be included in my quilt.

These blocks are really a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to making more next week!

Thanks so much Melody! Well, I figure, I already bought the subscription, I can just make the blocks when I have time (although I do intend to get to most of them this summer)

Love the black background! My seven year old son wants to learn how to crochet so he can make himself toys. I can’t wait until my two year old daughter is ready to sew. Yours did a wonderful job!
