Emblem Duffle Bag Release

The Emblem Duffle Bag sewing pattern is now available in pdf and paper pattern formats! This is a medium-sized duffle bag that is deceptive in its appearance – the bag is actually made with only front and back fabrics that are cleverly manipulated into a boxy bag!

This bag was actually the original inspiration for the Emblem Duffle Bag. This is a bag that I made for Tula Pink for her Quilt Market booth for her fabric line, ‘Slow and Steady’. Tula had specific details for her bag in mind, including these 2″ wide hot-pink seat belt straps. So cool! Tula wanted to have more than one print used on the exterior of the bag, so we decided on this color-blocking effect with the two fabrics.

And Tula actually made (SHE MADE A BAG FROM MY PATTERN!) an Emblem Duffle Bag with machine embroidery from every single one of the colors in her new Ultimate Aurifil Collection! Anyway, give me a minute to calm myself and I’ll tell you some more about this pattern.

Finished Size:          18” long x 10” tall x 8” deep      (46cm long x 25.5cm tall x 20.5cm deep)

The bag has an optional false bottom, which I find pretty handy (although it holds its shape really well if you’re packing it in with lots of stuff!). It has two zippered pockets in the lining.

The bag on the pattern cover (in cheetah print) was made by Amber of Roar Haus, who was one of the pattern testers. As usual, I’m excited to show off all of the other tester versions as they worked really hard on their bags and they are each unique and gorgeous! Thank you so much!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by Natalie of Hungry Hippie

Natalie of Hungry Hippie made this fantastic Emblem Duffle Bag using fabric from Spoonflower. I think it’s fan-tastic!! If you’re not familiar with Spoonflower, it’s a print-on-demand website with lots of different substrates; you can upload your own design or use one of the many designs already available on the site. This is a really great kitschy vintage print and looks beautiful with the linen!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by Cyndi of the Nosy PepperCyndi of The Nosy Pepper (and also on Instagram) made her bag in a metallic Echino print, with front handles to match! So cool! I love the pop of pink too, it’s a great accent to this stand-out bag!
Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by Amber of Roar HausAmber of Roar Haus (and also follow her on Instagram) made this duffle in Anna Maria Horner fabric that her mom picked out. When I saw this I ordered the same fabric to make one for my daughter (maybe as a birthday present?). So I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery in this case!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by Alison of Bobbin GirlAlison of Bobbin Girl, a bag-making shop in the UK, made her bag to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. I think ‘majestic’ is absolutely the appropriate word in this case!!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by Tracy of I've Got a Notion
Tracy (make sure to follow her on Instagram!) made not one but two duffles! The blue bag was made with pigskin for the front handles, and in the yellow print bag below, Tracy added her own zippered pocket to the front and mesh pocket on the insides, proving this bag is very adaptable to your needs!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by MariaMaria made her bag in plaid and black leather, and as her photo shows, it’s a very classy travel bag when paired with the black leather that she used here! I especially love the brief quilting on the straps and the fabric running down the middle of them!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by MelissaMelissa made her bag in a wonderful prism fabric with black leather. Melissa suggested to make sure that if you decide to use leather for your straps, that the leather is not too thick, as the straps will be meeting in the seam at the bottom of the bag. Beautiful job Melissa!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by Stephanie of Thread Ov MetalStephanie of Thread Ov Metal paired this great print with some diamond straight light quilting. I think the quilting inparticular is great because it echoes the straight lines on the straps. Beautiful work Stephanie!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by CarinaThis next bag is made by Carina (please follow her on Instagram!) in Cotton+Steel ‘Zephyr’ fabrics. I think this is a really whimsical print that really showcase all of the features of her bag, especially when the strap fabrics matches the print so perfectly! Gorgeous!!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by JamieJamie’s got a great beachy fabric to be the main feature on her new travel bag! A vertically-cut stripe fabric would be a great option – the thicker the better!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by DiaThis is Dia’s first bag ever! She deserves a huge hand, and she obviously went all-in by working with some leather too! Beautiful work Dia and congratulations!!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by MaireI decided to show the top view of Maire’s bag here in this beautiful batik – this bag looks great and holds its shape, even though it is made with front and back pieces only, with a little bit of pressing! Super job, Maire!

Sew Sweetness Emblem Duffle Bag, sewn by Crystal of the Cloth AlbatrossThe Cloth Albatross is at it again! Crystal made her bag in a masculine palette of white and black, with accenting gold hardware and rivets. She added her own modifications to the zipper end, applying some strapping to the bottom of the bag to attach to the end. Really creative, Crystal!

I love this bag and the only issue I have with it is that it holds so much fabric that it is almost too heavy for me to lift. I have used it constantly since making it and I love it. So much room!! Thanks again Sara.

  2. Shelly says:

I love this bag pattern! Genius how you achieved the boxy shape from the top!

  3. Congrats on a great pattern Sara and your testers bags are perfection!!

I always love seeing your new patterns and all the variety from your testers. I was planning to do train cases for my daughters this year, but now I might have to change my plan. I might also have to start sewing again. 🙂

  5. Helen says:

The bag is a beautiful pattern, but I’m a bit confused by your description of the bottom, that it has “an optional false bottom.” I’m not quite sure what you mean by that. Are there any pics or some way of clarifying for me? Thanks!! Hugs, H in Healdsburg

  6. Helen says:

Also, a question about zippers: do you find a specific brand is best, do you go more with color matching in your choice, etc? Thanks so much!! Hugs, H

  7. Rose White says:

Love that bag, will have to get the pattern

  8. Claudia says:

I would like the bag to end up 25″x12″x12″…would this pattern allow easy diminsion adjustments??

  9. Jessica says:

Love the look of this bag! Do you think it might be possible to make from leather?

  10. Carol Beasley says:

I, too, wonder what you mean by “false bottom.” Please explain.

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Carol! It’s a removable stiff bottom that helps prevent the bottom of the bag from bowing down under the weight of the items you place inside. Hope this helps!
