Sewing Knits

I love sewing with knits! Fun, versatile and great for those who want quick and easy make. Knits are great for ease of fit; they stretch to fit your body, it’s easier to fit to you than say a woven fabric.

As you progress in your sewing journey, it’s a great idea to continuing your education, not only in practice but also by taking classes in real life or online.

I highly recommend Sewing Fashion Knits; Beyond the Basics with Linda Lee; this is great for anyone getting into knits or want to learn techniques for sewing this fantastic substrate!

I have been working with knits for over 5 years, this class has taught me a lot of useful techniques that I wasn’t aware of, and I can pass some of my learnings to my students when the occasion arises.

Craftsy Class: Sewing Fashion Knits Beyond Basics, class review

Overview

This course if broken down into 7 class sections with a BONUS class on sewing together a simple garment designed and drafted by Linda Lee.  Each section has anywhere between 5-9 subclasses. This makes it easy to return to a section of the class that you want to revisit.

Craftsy - Meet Linda Lee

These sections are easy to watch and give a lot of useful information regarding cutting and marking knits. Things I would have never considered trying.

Types of Knits, Preparing fabric and Cutting & Marking

The first 3 sections of this class Linda dives into all they different types, cost and durability. There are so many kinds of knit that I had no clue were even available.

Craftsy - Preparing Fabric 2

Then how to prepare your fabric; this section goes through basic washing, drying, cutting, salvage and the different types of stretch. Things you may not have considered when choosing your fabric and how to deal with rolling, bunching and stretching of the fabrics.

Sewing and Finishings

This section gets down to bindings, sewing, stitches, machines and ways to finish your seams.  This touches on stitch selection, length and settings for width. There are a few different sewing feet that will help you from stretching your fabric. Linda gives fantastic tips on hemming which are invaluable!

Craftsy - Seam Finishes 2

This class is classified as an intermediate class however it laid out to be if you were a beginner you could easily follow this course with success. Linda really does a great job making each technique easy to understand and able to be replicated.

Craftsy - Edge Finishes

Along with this class I have been working with sweater knits a lot this year, it’s such a fantastic weight of fabric and really has a beautiful drape.  I have a few more to make and now have the confidence to make the next ones even better and have a ready to wear look!

Final thoughts

This class is fantastic! I learned a lot of great tips and techniques to follow going forward! I even took what I learned in this class and a new shirt!

McCall’s M6205, it’s a looser fit top with drape, I wanted a fun sweater for the rest of the “cold” weather we have been getting in Ohio, something that I can wear up until the weather warms up. I did modify the pattern since I am not really a hi-low gal. I think it turned out great.

I followed a lot of the tips from this class with hemming and reinforcing the shoulder seams; it made sewing with knits easier and I achieved a much more professional look! I have to hand it to Linda Lee she knows her knits!

I didn’t pay for my class; it was part of the review but this is one has been in my wish list for a while. I love taking courses from Craftsy, I have taken quite a few courses in my sewing career and each of them has made me a much better teacher at my sewing shop. Never stop learning! Check out all the other amazing classes online! You will not be disappointed!
