Ultimate Art Organizer

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern

I’m excited to introduce you to my newest pattern, the Ultimate Art Organizer! It is available in pdf and paper pattern formats. This is a step up from my Creative Maker Supply Case pattern; where that was just front and back, the Ultimate Art Organizer has 2 pages in the middle of the case and makes use of 3 outer zippers. It’s fantastic for the diehard artist and fits major amounts of sewing/craft supplies!

I made my cover version in Tula Pink ‘Eden’ fabrics. The tiger motif fits perfectly on the regular-sized case. I also used long handbag zippers from my shop.

The pattern features 16 or 17 pages (paper pattern booklet or pdf pattern, respectively) of sewing instructions, complete with 34 full-color step-by-step photos.

Supplies (will make 1 organizer)

  • 1 fat quarter of exterior fabric
  • 3/4 yard of lining fabric
  • 1-1/2 yards of 20” wide Pellon® SF-101 Shape Flex® fusible woven interfacing (or medium-weight fusible interfacing)
  •  9” x 21” piece of foam interfacing (By Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, or Bosal In R Form)
  • 2/3 yard Pellon #71 Peltex fusible interfacing (or extra-heavy interfacing)
  • Three Handbag zippers*          (mini – 22”;   regular – 30”) – feel free to use a longer zipper and trim down later
  • Two 7” zippers (one zipper for mini size)
  • 1/4” wide elastic        (mini – 2 yards;   regular – 4 yards)
  • One piece of mesh         (mini – 6-1/4” x 6-1/4”;   regular – 8-1/2” x 6-1/2”)

*it is very important to use a handbag zipper here; handbag zippers have wider zipper tape, which will allow the case to accommodate your supplies; also, many handbag zippers have 2 zipper pulls, which is very convenient, while not absolutely necessary. My handbag zipper was 1-1/4” wide.Do NOT use zippers with large plastic teeth.

I had a lot of fun making this case, and as always my pattern testers have some fun things to show you! It was amazing to see all the creative ways of filling the case!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer made by ChloeChloe of Deadly Craft is really showing her skills here with this patchwork version of the pattern (notice all of the piecing on the front lining up with the side panel) and a fashionable metal zipper! Well done Chloe!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by Tracy of I've Got a NotionTracy of I’ve Got a Notion made her case with all sorts of careful details that really draw notice, such as the black and white fabric showing off the assorted colors of zips, and bright fabrics on the inside showing off a bounty of art supplies. Thank you for your attention to detail, Tracy!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewn by Liz of Moments...Liz from Moments… made her case to hold all of her sewing supplies – needles, presser feet, etc. She adapted the pattern to have vinyl pockets instead of elastic to hold all of the feet and needles. So creative Liz!!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by Bree of My Crafty CrapBree of My Crafty Crap made a lovely denim case with bright colored prints for each of the pages. Beyond beautiful and that little patchwork hexagon is the icing on the cake!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by Crystal of the Cloth AlbatrossCrystal of The Cloth Albatross also made her regular-sized case to hold her sewing notions and needles. She used Chillingsworth skeleton fabric for the exterior and lining (great use of the huge skeleton panel print too!). Love this and I really must do this for my needles and presser feet – they’re currently strewn about my desk and it’s not too handy. Beautiful work Crystal!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern sewn by LeahLeah made her organizer in a fun multi-print and used bright zippers and binding to show off the features on the inside of the case. She added more pockets and used less elastic for a versatile take!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by BernieBernie made her organizer in Tula Pink ‘Elizabeth’ fabrics. She used it for storing crochet supplies as well as marking tools such as pens and lined paper. Beautiful work Bernie, and this is a great chance to combine several prints from a fabric line such as Bernie has done here!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by Maria of Beautiful BloomsMaria of Beautiful Blooms made the regular-sized case with plenty of space for pencils and chalkboard fabric for several ‘pages’ in the organizer. Maria thought it might also be neat to use some sort of dry erase material in place of the chalkboard fabric (my kids love dry erase markers!). Great idea and beautiful work Maria!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern sewn by AudreyAudrey made her case with a fairy fabric from RJR Fabrics and some batiks on the inside. She used her case to store some knitting needles and crochet hooks which I think is fabulous! It fits so many inside!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by NicoleNicole made the mini case in an adorable owl fabric that she’s quilted, and with a graphic print for the inside of the case. It looks like she’s also used some chalk fabric for the last ‘page’ in the organizer, which I think is a brilliant idea and I’ll have to use myself!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by CarolineCaroline jazzed up her organizer by using Renaissance Ribbons on the side of the case where the zipper is attached to. As you can see, she’s got her crochet supplies all loaded up! What a beauty!!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by CindyCindy used some pretty pink decorative elastic to hold the pencils in place! I think that this is completely appropriate with the polka dot fabrics! Awesome!!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by Sandie of Crazy 'bout QuiltsSandie of Crazy ’bout Quilts now has a special place for many crayons and a notebook in this beautiful blue organizer!  Great work Sandie!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by LauraLaura made the regular size case in Nicey Jane fabrics, and the finish looks just perfect! I love how everything coordinates so well and the zipper seems to blend right into the fabrics. Great job Laura!

Sew Sweetness Ultimate Art Organizer sewing pattern, sewn by Susan of SB StitchingSusan of SB Stitching made this chic cat organizer for sewing supplies. This is the regular-sized case. Just darling, and I like the way that the elastic has been attached so as to fit each supply, such as the scissors!

Where do you source your 30 inch handbag zippers? I’m having a terrible time finding them.

    Thanks!

  8. Love those bags! I’m going to have to make one for myself 🙂

I love all of these creations and wish I had the time, space & tools to make my own but, alas, I’m a workaholic who now lives in NY so no more craft room. Would any of you talented ladies like to make a customized version of this case for my tablet & travel gear? Some simple edits to the inside & a sturdy handle on the outside along with some rugged exterior material is all that’s needed. I’d be willing to pay $100 all in and you can set your own deadline… email me – [email protected]. thanks, Carrie

Does the pdf pattern include patterns from the testers? I really like the sewing notions cases by Moments & The Cloth Albatross. I wouldn’t be able to accomplish the same without the patterns.

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Deb! Thanks for your comment. Since I haven’t made the modification myself, that Moments and The Cloth Albatross made to their own cases, this information is not included in the pattern. I would be happy to consider it for a tutorial in future. Thank you!

      1. Deb MacDonald says:

Hi Sara. Thanks for replying. A tutorial would be very beneficial for me! I’m fairly new to sewing & just don’t have the mind to be able to figure things like that for myself. I can only sew with patterns or visual guidance. I’ve done machine embroidery for years, but sewing…is a whole other entity for me. I really want to use your pattern to make a case like theirs for scissors, rotary cutters, tweezers, needles & machine feet to carry to my embroidery classes.

  11. Paige Chick says:

I’ve been thinking of something in between this case and the Creative Maker one … Would it work for me to not include a 3rd opening while following this pattern?

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Paige! To be honest, the instructions would vastly change for omitting one of the zippers, unfortunately. Not impossible, just will take some extra brain-power. 🙂

      1. Paige Chick says:

Thank you for the heads-up. Brain power has been in short supply lately, so extra compartments it is!

  12. Stacy Tyler says:

I don’t understand the zipper installation part of the pattern. Is there a video tutorial?

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Stacy, I don’t currently have a video available for this pattern (later this year), but I’m happy to help, which Step # are you stuck on? Feel free to email me [email protected]

  13. Cecilia O Dwyer says:

    Hello.
I would love to make this for my sewing machine feet (all 32 of them)and sewing needles. Would it be easy to adjust pattern.
    Thank you for your time.
    Cecilia

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Cecilia, I have a video tutorial on how to add a needle sleeve to any project, this may help! https://sewsweetness.com/2018/12/video-how-to-add-a-needle-sleeve-to-your-project.html?v=7516fd43adaa
