Jumpstart Duffle Bag

Jumpstart Duffle Bag sewing pattern from the book Windy City Bags by Sara Lawson

Before the holidays, I started showing all of the projects from my new book, Windy City Bags. You can find Windy City Bags on Amazon, or order a signed copy from my pattern shop (signed copies come with a FREE paper pattern of your choice from my shop – an $11 value!).

Today I’d like to show one of the biggest bags in the book, the Jumpstart Duffle Bag. I had a lot of requests in the past for a duffle bag sewing pattern, and for some reason I never got around to it. While I was writing my book, I thought it would be the perfect time for the duffle!

For this purple floral version, I used an out-of-print fabric by Tula Pink from the ‘Nightshade’ line. The bag makes use of o-rings for the front handles, and there is also an adjustable side strap. The bag also features zippered pockets, which you can see on the front and side.

My daughter made me a drawing the other day of a bag that she would like me to make, and thank goodness that her drawing was pretty close to this duffle bag, lol! I can’t wait to make one for her!

Cindy from Raspberry Sunshine pattern-tested this bag for the book, and I sent her some more Tula Pink to use – these aqua and red fabrics are from the ‘Moonshine’ fabric line. I love how the front panel of the bag underneath the zippers has *just* enough room to feature two deer heads.

Cindy made another bag over the weekend and here’s what she came up with! I love it!

I’d love to see what you are making from the book! A lot of made projects are starting to roll in! Feel free to post on social media or join my little closed Facebook group and post them there, where we have a lot of fun sharing bag makes and chatting!

Love the duffle bag pattern! Can that be purchased separately? Don’t see it on the web site.

  2. Gina B. says:

It’s beautiful! Question: How is the lining attached?

Could you give approximate size–is this pattern available

  4. Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I will be teaching the 2 bags I tested for you. The Appaloosa and the Tudor. Many of my friends at my LQS (Tangled Threads, Lynden, WA) have asked me to do it …I love your bags. Your directions are the best. I hope you will have a new one for me to test out soon.
    Thanks!!
