Windy City Bags book - Hey Mercedes Bag

This is the first bag in my new book Windy City Bags, out December 1, 2015. It is available on Amazon and in my pattern shop (books purchased from my shop will be signed by me, ship for free in the U.S. and with discounted international shipping, and you’ll receive a FREE paper pattern from my shop of your choice, an $11 value!).

The Hey Mercedes Bag is stylized tote with a round bottom and curved top panel. I’ve always wanted to design a rounded-bottom bag, but never gotten around to it. While it was very high on my list, I just didn’t know how to execute that roundness while still making a 3-dimensional (not flat) bag. Until now. For this bag, I used lovely Tula Pink ‘Parisville’ fabric from my stash. While I was working on projects for the book, I kept a little sheet of paper on my desk with all of Tula’s fabric lines written on them. As I would make another bag for the book, I’d cross off the Tula Pink fabric line that I used for that particular bag. I’m proud to say that she’s my favorite fabric designer and even more proud that I’ve represented nearly every one of her fabric lines in this book (for reference, at the time I was working on the book projects, her ‘Bumble’ fabric line had just been released).

The Hey Mercedes Bag uses a bit of purse hardware in the straps; the straps slightly curve with the shape of the bag, and they also have detailed tabs near the top of the bag where it meets the purse hardware (metal rectangles). The bag closes securely with a magnetic snap and there is a zippered pocket in the lining.

Here is another gorgeous version of the bag that was made and pattern-tested for the book by Pam of Hip to Be a Square Podcast. Thanks Pam! This bag is in Tula Pink ‘The Birds and the Bees’ fabric.

I hope you enjoyed a look at the Hey Mercedes Bag! I look forward to showing you the rest of the bags from the book!

I’ve got it on pre-order from Amazon UK as postage from USA makes it too expensive even though I’d have loved you to sign it. Just made my first bag so need to get more ideas and designs to add to my skills. Also joined your Craftsy Class – excellent.
