Today’s post is from Sunni of A Fashionable Stitch.

Hello! Sunni from A Fashionable Stitch here. I am delighted to be apart of this fun Dress Up Party! Yay! Today I thought I would give you a review of two things I’ve made. This is an outfit that I love to wear because, at least for me, it’s not overly dressy and not overly casual. It’s just right. It was an outfit that was inspired by a Boden catalogue image – I’m a Boden inspiration junkie – and I’ve also got a soft spot for anything polka dotted. Sigh. Polka dots are marvelously playful little prints. I love them so!

The skirt is Kwik Sew 3728. I have made this skirt before. I then paired the skirt with something simple – a vintage Simplicity sewing pattern for a t-shirt. I’ve been working on going through my stash this year and that includes the rather alarming number of sewing patterns I have. Most of which have never even been touched or made up, so now I’m in the phase of deciding whether or not some are really worth keeping. And in order to decide, I might as well make them up to see, eh? This Simplicity 7982 was one such pattern. I thought I should check it out and see if it had good bones.

This tee is made from a minty organic mini rib cotton and it turned out to be incredibly soft, something I’ve noticed about organic knits. I decided to go a little rogue and opt to just create a simple tee here with none of the extras from the sewing pattern, like the bib trim accent or tie closure – I’ll have to try those at a later date. The pattern is fine except for this little bit of excess at the back neck, which my photos don’t really show. But it’s there, trust me. Next time I’ll need to tuck that part out. Still, this t-shirt is totally wearable and is the perfect fit style for me – I like them a little looser and not showing my every lump and bump!

My skirt is made from a stretch navy polka dot cotton. I opted to line it and for the inner waistband I used a petersham ribbon. Additionally, I added piping to the outer waistband as my original inspiration had this feature and I loved it so! It has some wonderful welt pockets – pockets forever!!! – and I kept the length above the knee for easy wearing with flats or wedges and for summer fun and playfulness. This pattern originally has a center front button closure and while I think this is a darling detail, I opted to just cut on fold at center front this time around. I used a centered back zipper insertion – something I haven’t done since I taught my Craftsy class (bad Sunni!) but since I had the zipper, I thought I might as well.

All in all, two wins here. Now bring on summer! Yay!

Beautiful! I love a lined skirt. It feels so ‘couture’. I also like to use Petersham for the waistband. Your piping really defined this as a great sew. I often ignore the lowly t-shirt as I sew. I think I may have to rethink that.

I love a tee with a casual skirt. They are great for a trip to the grocery store or to pick up the kids. So easy-peasy! I’ve never sewn a tee and may have to give it a whirl. Nicely done!

Sunni, I liked your T so much that I ordered the pattern! Will you be discussing the changes you made to the neckline? I still struggle to get the binding to lie flat.
