The Baker Street Bag only features one pattern piece (the rest are rectangular cuts), so only one page of templates to print (and no taping together!). The supplies are also minimal:

  • 3/4 yard of exterior fabric
  • 3/4 yard of lining fabric
  • 1/2 yard of By Annie’s Soft and Stable (Soft and Stable is a 1/8” thick, foam sew-in interfacing; one of my testers also recommends automotive headliner fabric in place of the Soft and Stable; you can also substitute a needled fleece fusible interfacing for the Soft and Stable, such as Pellon #TP971F Thermolam Plus fusible interfacing)
  • 2-1/2 yards of Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or medium-weight fusible interfacing)
  • 12” zipper

The finished size of the bag is 12” long x 8” tall x 4” deep.

118

When making this bag, you’ll assemble the top closure with a recessed zipper (although feel free to swap out for a magnetic snap closure if you prefer!).

119

There are also some quick and easy topstitched pockets in the lining of the bag:

I hope you like the bag! I made mine with new Cotton + Steel fabrics by Melody Miller, and used 40wt Aurifil thread to make the bag.

  20. Kathleen Burke says:

I made the Baker Street bag today. Only one suggestion….I did not like the raw edge of the zipper showing near the zipper pull, so I turned the edges in at a 45 degree angle, so the edges are caught inside the seam of the zipper panels. It looks much neater. Otherwise, it came out great!

  21. Gaye says:

Do you place the tacky side of the Soft and Stable to the wrong side of the exterior panel? Thanks for the great tutorial. I am making one with Mickey Mouse fabric.

I’m making this bag now but am confused about what to do with the handles when you sew the top of the bag closed. Do they get caught folded over in the seam or what?

  27. Judy Nurkkala says:

Your Baker Street bag is my first attempt at making a bag. I have everything cut out in a beautiful cotton and have watched your tutorial. One question: it appears you use the Soft and Stable for the cork bag only and the Pellon fusible for the cotton. Am I correct? Or do you use both?

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Judy! I used the foam for both bags. Thank you!

  28. marge grizzard says:

I really like this bag, but cannot find the pattern. Someone shared the post where it is available, but still can’t find it.

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hello Marge, you can find the pattern and video here: https://sewsweetness.com/2017/12/new-free-video-baker-street-bag.html
      Thank you!

  29. Sarah says:

Is it really two and a half yards of the shape flex, or am I missing something? That seems like a lot given the size of the bag and the other pieces.

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hello Sarah! If you are using cork, leather, or vinyl for your bag, you will need less Shape Flex (since you don’t need any for the straps). Thank you!

  30. Corliss A. corder says:

I LOVE that fabric with the Viewmaster reels !!! Where can I find it ?

    1. sewsweetness says:

Hi Corliss! It was designed by Melody Miller. You may be able to find some on Etsy. Thank you!

  31. george says:

    you left out the gusset.

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi George! In my patterns, all squares and rectangles are not represented by pattern pieces; however, these pieces are called out in the Cutting Instructions for easy rotary cutting. Thank you!
