Enjoy this free pattern for the Baker Street Bag – you can download the pdf pattern instructions here:PATTERN – Baker Street Bag . It features 11 pages of sewing instructions, and 26 full-color step-by-step photos.
The Baker Street Bag only features one pattern piece (the rest are rectangular cuts), so only one page of templates to print (and no taping together!). The supplies are also minimal:
- 3/4 yard of exterior fabric
- 3/4 yard of lining fabric
- 1/2 yard of By Annie’s Soft and Stable (Soft and Stable is a 1/8” thick, foam sew-in interfacing; one of my testers also recommends automotive headliner fabric in place of the Soft and Stable; you can also substitute a needled fleece fusible interfacing for the Soft and Stable, such as Pellon #TP971F Thermolam Plus fusible interfacing)
- 2-1/2 yards of Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or medium-weight fusible interfacing)
- 12” zipper
The finished size of the bag is 12” long x 8” tall x 4” deep.
When making this bag, you’ll assemble the top closure with a recessed zipper (although feel free to swap out for a magnetic snap closure if you prefer!).
There are also some quick and easy topstitched pockets in the lining of the bag:
I hope you like the bag! I made mine with new Cotton + Steel fabrics by Melody Miller, and used 40wt Aurifil thread to make the bag.
Love it!!!! Can’t wait to make one!
Thank you! The zipper panels kind of sucked, but that could just be my level of skill or machine!
Thanks, Sara! I’ll try this one for sure!
Thanks for sharing – this is my favorite purse style and I need a good basic pattern with the zip closure!
Thanks Sara. Love the simplicity of this bag and that so much can be done to it if wanted.
Thank you Sara!! Love this simple bag! I’ll make myself one, that for sure!
Thank you so much for sharing. Would this be good for a first time bag?
Ugh! I need to make this NOW!!!
Beautiful bag Sara- and I love it in the viewfinders fabric!

BAQS posted this thanks for sharing.
Sweet!
Love the bag, and that fabric is so awesome. I must find the fabric so I can the bag with it.
Hmm, a couple of yards of that print just dropped through my door lol
Thank you for the pattern! Can’t wait to try it out!
I love the bag. Where did you find the wonderful fabric? Would love to make a bag with this fabric
I made the Baker Street bag today. Only one suggestion….I did not like the raw edge of the zipper showing near the zipper pull, so I turned the edges in at a 45 degree angle, so the edges are caught inside the seam of the zipper panels. It looks much neater. Otherwise, it came out great!
Do you place the tacky side of the Soft and Stable to the wrong side of the exterior panel? Thanks for the great tutorial. I am making one with Mickey Mouse fabric.
Thank you for all your free tutorials and patterns – you are so generous! I can’t wait to try a few of these bags.
Thank you for the pattern It made a lovely bag – actually, my favourite so far. I will be trying more of your patterns.
I’m making this bag now but am confused about what to do with the handles when you sew the top of the bag closed. Do they get caught folded over in the seam or what?
Thank you for the freebie, Sara. I’m looking forward to making this.
I signed up for your newsletter but how do I get the full pattern for the baker street bag?
Hi Regina! You can find the link to download the Baker Street Bag pattern in the first paragraph of this blog post (the link starts with PATTERN – Baker Street Bag). Hope this helps!
Your Baker Street bag is my first attempt at making a bag. I have everything cut out in a beautiful cotton and have watched your tutorial. One question: it appears you use the Soft and Stable for the cork bag only and the Pellon fusible for the cotton. Am I correct? Or do you use both?
Hi Judy! I used the foam for both bags. Thank you!
I really like this bag, but cannot find the pattern. Someone shared the post where it is available, but still can’t find it.
Hello Marge, you can find the pattern and video here: https://sewsweetness.com/2017/12/new-free-video-baker-street-bag.html
Thank you!
Is it really two and a half yards of the shape flex, or am I missing something? That seems like a lot given the size of the bag and the other pieces.
Hello Sarah! If you are using cork, leather, or vinyl for your bag, you will need less Shape Flex (since you don’t need any for the straps). Thank you!
I LOVE that fabric with the Viewmaster reels !!! Where can I find it ?
Hi Corliss! It was designed by Melody Miller. You may be able to find some on Etsy. Thank you!
you left out the gusset.
Hi George! In my patterns, all squares and rectangles are not represented by pattern pieces; however, these pieces are called out in the Cutting Instructions for easy rotary cutting. Thank you!
