Feathers Paper-Pieced Dress

dress

This giveaway is now closed. The winner is #21 Mary on Lake Pulaski.

Today, I’m really happy to be a part of Alison Glass‘s gigantic blog tour for all of her projects that she has set to release for the rest of the year. I really don’t know how she does it, she’s amazing! In case you haven’t heard, she is releasing Sunprint, from now through the rest of the year. Sunprint is a series of 74 coordinating fabrics, and they are all truly amazing. My favorite are the colorways of text print. Besides this, she has another line out later this year called Clover Sunshine, and if that isn’t enough, she has released some quilt and embroidery patterns.

My blog stop today is in celebration of the release of the Feathers Quilt Pattern. This is available as a pdf download or a printed pattern. Alison co-wrote this pattern with Nydia of The ADD Crafter. The pattern is a foundation paper-pieced pattern which has many possibilities, as you can mix and match the feathers into smaller projects as well as the full quilt.

For my Feathers project, I decided to make a paper-pieced dress. You may remember my Space Dust Dress from last year, which I also paper-pieced. Honestly, at the time I made that dress, I thought there was no way that I could ever make anything equally as creative, garment-wise. When Alison asked me to participate in her blog hop, a lightning bolt struck.I found the Feathers pattern very easy to follow. If you have never paper-pieced before, there are explanations and diagrams on how to do so, and they go into depth, which a beginning paper-piecer should find very helpful. The cutting instructions are organized so that if you aren’t making the full quilt (like me), you won’t have to do any extra calculating, which is nice. I printed my paper pieces out on regular printer paper and got to work. For this dress, the main fabric is a black-on-gray text print from Alison’s Sunprint line, and the feathers were made with Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids. I did not finish the edges of my paper-piecing (i.e. serging) because I did not want that to create extra bulk in certain areas of the dress; I will just have it dry-cleaned, like my Space Dust dress. I’m saving this new darling until next month at Quilt Market. 🙂

The dress pattern I used was the Serendipity Studio Naomi Dress. I am a huge fan of Kay Whitt of Serendipity Studio, and I will make any dress that she designs. She fully and completely has my trust as a sewist, because I know every time I make something of hers, it will be a pleasure to sew, and I will love the final results. I have loved every single thing I have made with her patterns (which is now growing to near 20 things in my closet).

My favorite feature of this dress pattern is the keyhole cut-out in the back (which is optional, in case you prefer it without). There are also 3 pleats at the neckline, which are very flattering. I think this pattern would be great for a beginning garment-sewist because a) there is no zipper, this is a pull-over-your-head type of dress, but it’s still form-fitting because of the elastic at the high waist, and b) there are no darts at the bust to adjust to your body, which can be a small challenge. All-in-all, love the dress pattern, and will be making this pattern again in a couple weeks out of voile.

I think the bright solids really compliment the dark text fabric well, and I’m really in love with the Feathers pattern. I am looking forward to making the quilt in the near future, because I would love to have that on my bed. If I made the quilt, I think I would probably use all the fabrics in the Sunprint line, with a dark gray background fabric (or maybe even this same black-on-gray text that I used for the dress).

So, I have not one but two goodies to share with you. First of all, visit Alison Glass‘s blog and enter to win this crazy 74-fat quarter bundle of the entire Sunprint line. YES! Some lucky ducky is going to win this bundle! Pop on over here to enter that giveaway.

Some of my sponsors have already begun receiving the beginning prints from Sunprint, including Pink Castle Fabrics.

And another giveaway I have to share with you is that one of my readers will win a copy of the Feathers pdf quilt pattern. To enter that giveaway, please click here to enter the Feathers Quilt Pattern giveaway. One winner will be randomly chosen on Friday, September 6th at 7pm CT. Good luck!

  17. Just love this! Lovely work – and what a great idea, pairing a dress pattern and a quilt pattern! I’ve wanted to try more quilting techniques, but the beds in my house are now covered, so clothing is a great alternative.

Hi, Sara! I met you at Sewing Summit last year and you were wearing another great dress. I loved this one too!!! Thanks for the giveaway, I had seen the line and was trying to decide which colors to get. I hope I win this so I don’t have to decide!

  23. Beth says:

Who else would take a paper pieced quilt pattern and turn it into a fab dress? I love it. I didn’t think you could top last year’s dress in creativity and amazingness.. I love them both so I will have to call it a tie. And it looks perfect on you.

  24. Oh you are so bloody clever!

  25. Lisa S. says:

    Dear Sara,
I love the dress that you made with the “Feathers”. The pattern is so versatile in that you can make many things with it, dresses, pillows, quilts, bags-the only limit is your imagination. That’s why I love Alison’s designs, they’re simple and imaginative. I didn’t realize that you had used the “Text” print for the background as it’s so subtle. I would love to see your dress in person (I may have to make one). Thank you for sharing it with us and for offering us another chance to win this wonderful pattern and the embroidery patterns too (I would love the flowers. I have the animals already).
