Do you need a bag for toting your laptop, iPad, or Kindle? This just might be the one!! This is my new (intermediate-level) PDF pattern and also paper pattern, the Petrillo Bag, available right now in my pattern shop! The Petrillo Bag is a large bag that features teardrop-shaped sides, a gathered flap closure, and sturdy front straps.
I made my bag using new ‘Carnaby Street’ fabrics, by Pat Bravo for Art Gallery Fabrics. When I saw this line in their catalog in October, I just knew it was meant for a bag, and when it came out last month, I scooped some up immediately! The solid that I used for the strap is ‘Emerald’, also by Art Gallery! The bag was also stitched using Aurifil 40wt. thread, which keeps my seams hidden on the inside and shows off the lovely topstitching on the outside!
This bag is the perfect complement to the busy woman-on-the go! The design features a pretty gathered flap and front straps. There is also an inner zippered pocket and a padded pocket with a flap, which would be perfect for toting your iPad or other electronic device! Also, complete the removable stiff false bottom for added stability!
The pdf pattern includes 18 pages of sewing instructions, complete with 34 step-by-step color photos.
Finished Size: 12” long x 15-1/2” tall
Supplies Needed to Make this Bag
3/4 yard of Exterior Fabric (or 1 yard if your fabric is directional)
1 yard of Lining Fabric
1/2 yard of fabric for straps and flap accent
1/4 yard of fabric for the flap
2-1/3 yards of Pellon® SF-101 Shape Flex® fusible woven interfacing
1 yard of By Annie’s Soft and Stable™, available at local quilt shops or on-line
(Soft and Stable is a 1/8” thick, foam sew-in interfacing; one of my testers also recommends automotive headliner fabric in place of the Soft and Stable; you can also substitute a needled fleece fusible interfacing for the Soft and Stable, such as Pellon #TP971F Thermolam Plus fusible interfacing)
9” zipper
Two pairs of sew-in invisible magnetic snaps (I used 18mm but a smaller size would be fine too)
2 pieces, each 10-1/4” x 4-1/4” to slip into the false bottom (you can use plastic quilter’s template, cardboard, or extra-heavy interfacing, such as Pellon Peltex; one of my testers used a plastic cutting board from the dollar store)
Thank you again to all of my wonderful testers, who caught my mistakes, helped me get my pattern ready for public release, and in the process sewed up some absolutely fantastic bags!! Thank you to each and every one of you!!
Julianna from Sewing Under the Rainbow made this awesome version in Anna Maria Horner fabrics (and it is indeed, most definitely, “gorgeous”!!). I love the fussy cutting on the straps too! Julianna and I have a little inside joke about writing patterns…Julianna I am *trying* my best to be good… (notice I said trying) 🙂 You can find her blog post about her bag here!
Shannon from 2nd Story Sewing made this amazing, amazing bag in a large scale print, with a textured fabric for the strap and accent. I so completely adore this bag, and I’m not ashamed to say that I totally want this! Read the blog post about Shannon’s bag right here!
Melanie made her bag to coordinate with her laptop bag, which is red and black. It looks super-amazing, and she had a really genius idea…the directions call for material to use as a false bottom, and Melanie is the frugalista here for getting cutting boards from the dollar store (which came two to a pack!)!!
Maria made this great version in Joel Dewberry ‘Notting Hill’. She had other fabric in mind, but it didn’t come in time, so she used this instead. I am sort of glad the mail stalled, because this looks a whole lot of beautiful!!!!
Terry made her bag in some obviously much-hoarded Amy Butler ‘Ginger Bliss’ fabric! So super pretty, I so love her bag!!
Ella made her bag in Tula Pink fabric from the ‘Parisville’ line. I just got a bit of this colorway last week, your bag is so fabulous Ella, you’re giving me ideas!!
Liz from Moments… made this absolutely wonderful bag in primary-colored fabrics! I love the shape of her bag, and she got those gathers just perfect! It’s gorgeous!!
Cindy from Raspberry Sunshine made this great bag with mid-weight linen, and again she used automotive headline fabric as interfacing instead of the Soft and Stable. I think the linen looks fabulous with the printed flap!
Marti from 52 Quilts made her bag in…can it be?? My favorite two things in the world (text fabric and polka dots)??? Helloooo gorgeous!!
DeeAnn made her bag in a combination of blues and greens, combined with the bright sunny straps! I love this bag and the shape is just perfect!
Rachel of Gilbert Street Stitches made this awesome bag (and she used the pink polka dot fabric on the bottom of her bag too, which looks really sweet!), and I also liked the attention to detail in the fussy-cutting on her main fabric. Well done!!
Alli from B.Yazoo made this great bag with gray and citrus fabrics. Perfectly-shaped bag…and why can’t I live somewhere where this would be my photo backdrop right about now? 😉
Donna made her bag in some fun conversational fabric, with some Kaffe on the flap. And she adorned it with a cute accent to match the exterior of the bag, super fun!!
Danielle from Fresh Off the Spool made this gorgeous bag with solids and a patterned flap. Danielle actually made the bag with fusible fleece first, and she sent me photos of the first version…it was admittedly a bit saggy. But brave Danielle, not satisfied with that, got some Soft and Stable and re-sewed the entire thing…I am definitely glad she had the courage to sew this twice, because it’s gorgeous!! The white makes it look incredibly crisp!
Mary made her bag with a bit of Tula Pink ‘Flutterby’ that she was able to get her hands on…totally jealous! And the bag looks fabulous, look at those perfect gathers!
Irelle from Jibberish Designs made this bag with Sweetwater home dec fabrics. Yowza! Oh my gosh, this bag really packs a punch, and I adore it! I love the zing the lime gives it, how did I not see this numbers fabric before? It’s excellent!! Love the bag, and Irelle used a bit of Soft and Stable in her straps too!
Corrina of Another Thing Off the List made this elegant teal and yellow version, and with exceptional workmanship! Corrina has tested just about all of my patterns so far! Yay Corrina!
Marcia made this great bag in neutral fabrics, with a dusky blue gathered flap!
Alyssa made her bag in some bold chevron, with a bright blue strap! I love it, and the patterned flap completes the beautiful picture!!
Kim made this fantastic bag in red plaid! The perfect fall bag, and it’s also posed on that hunky mannequin. 😉
Bernie loved her Petrillo Bag so much that she made two…so fabulous! She said she used flannel for her second bag, so used iron-on vinyl to protect the fabric from pilling. What a great idea! I love both of these so much!
Jessica of A Full Bobbin made this fabric in a couple of Tula Pink fabrics, with Amy Butler fabric as the main portion of the bag! I think it looks amazing, and I love the stripes creeping up the straps!
Betsy made her bag in ‘Lucky Penny’ by Alison Glass. Well hello gorgeous!! I really love the bag, and for some reason it reminds me of biting into a ripe raspberry/strawberry.
Sue made this brilliant black and white version! My eyes were traveling all over this one, the prints are really fantastic! Wonderful job and super-precise bag, Sue!!
Nichole made this absolutely gorgeous version! She said that it was her first time using the Soft and Stable, and she loved how it made the bag look!
Nancy made this fabulous version in Asian-inspired fabric! I like that she chose a more neutral fabric for her straps and accent too, as I feel it helped the main fabrics stand out and really shine!
Kelly made her bag with Anna Maria Horner for the body, and a solid and contrasting fabric for the gathered flap! I told Kelly that I think the solid pulls everything together, it’s a wonderful bag!!
Maryellen made her bag in some Jinny Beyer holiday fabric, and she quilted it! I’m loving those suede-look straps, they make the bag look completely elegant!!
Joan made this great bag in a pretty patterned red fabric, with a bold black strap and accent! She also added purse feet to the bottom!
Yvette made this oh-so-cute version in yummy mushroom fabrics! I love the bag, and it looks so sturdy, beautiful job Yvette!
Lisa made this fabulous version in Kate Spain ‘Cuzco’! I love the fabric paired with the vibrant orange straps, and Lisa turned out a lovely shape on this one! Wonderful job!!
Leah made this gorgeous red bag with the fun piano-print flap! I love that the straps and accent are so textured, it really makes her bag pop!!
Brenda made this excellent version in gray and yellow fabrics! I love the textured straps, the bag looks sturdy and so well made!!
Lovely Peta made this gorgeous floral version with soft pretty pink straps. I think this was the perfect fabric choice for the pleats on the flap, the pleats look fantastic!
Susan from Sb Stitching made this hella good bag out of Laurie Wisbrun fabric, from her ‘Tufted Tweet’ line (one of my all-time favs). I love her bag, it’s crazy wonderful!!
Maria of Beautiful Blooms made this bright graphic bag out of Timeless Treasures fabrics. I love the brightness of the straps and the little bit of yellow peaking out from the gathered flap, it’s so beautiful!
Mona from Mona’s Box (ppsstt! She’s got great bags and accessories in her shop!) made this awesome version in Amy Butler fabrics. Oh swoon for polka dot straps! Mona said she used fusible fleece for her bag, and I think it looks rather excellent!

Oooo I think Mona’s is one of my favorites, especially because I have that fabric waiting to be used for something! Love this pattern Sara, wish I’d have time to test it but your other testers did a fabulous job!!
Oh my gosh ladies, you all did a GREAT job! I cannot believe how gorgeous the bags look with all the different types of fabric. Good job and a big congrats to Sara on another awesome pattern release!
I second that! And I have to say, thank you so much for the auto headliner idea from one of your previous bags – I used it in my Petrillo bag and it’s my new favorite thing to work with.
Oh my….hard to choose my favorite one!!! I’m in loooove with Irelle’s numbers, and Susan’s couches. 🙂 It makes me want to definitely make another! These would be awesome Christmas gifts.
Love the shape of this bag, and the many examples sewn by your pattern testers are so lovely and inspirational! I quickly purchased the download, and plan to sew 3 of them for my 20-something daughters for Easter 🙂
Just fabulous! All the testers did a great job combining fabrics with such a great bag pattern. I’m a bit jealous I couldn’t be a tester this time. You all did a superb job! Congratulations Sara!
What a great bag! Very clean design that offers great possibilities for fabric choices! I am partial to lime green (it was “my color” when I was in my early 20’s – in the late 1960’s!) so I really liked Irelle’s bag and Susan’s. I could see those bags on my shoulder this spring. I also really liked Mary Ellen’s bag and loved that suede look on the handles and trim. I could see that one on my shoulder come autumn. All the bags are awesome! Great pattern! I checked out your other bags and they are also excellent!
I’ve been trying to order this bag and for some reason I’m not getting a payment accepted. I’ve tried several cards. Is there a problem with the site? Thanks! I NEED this. LOL!
This is a great bag. Thank you Sara for the oppotunity to test the bag and to Sandy and Rachel for your kind words. I usually give my bags away, but this one I will be keeping!!
What a great pattern! Can’t wait to snag a copy! I just love all the little details and the closure is fabulous! Your pattern reviewer 2nd Story Sewing linked it up to my party last week and I’m featuring her bag and your pattern today! http://sewchatty.blogspot.com/2013/03/made-with-love-link-up.html
I’m totally in love with this bag but I’d like to find out what the depth is at the bottom of the teardrop sides. I can only see 2 dimensions listed and I’m trying to decide if it will hold all the stuff I want it to hold.

Your testers did a WONDERFUL job on this bag.
Wow!! The testers did such a fabulous job. All the bags look gorgeous!
Okay, never mind your design process, you have to do a ‘how I name this pattern’ post, ‘cos I’m utterly crap at it, and you seem to have loads :oD
PS, I also want to live with Alli in Hawaii for the lack of snow right now!
The bag is amazing. I love the teardrop shape of the sides. How do you do it???
Buying mine now!
Ok, its mine now! Can’t wait to start! Thanks Sara!
I think of all your bags, so far this one is my favorite! So beautiful!

This looks like it would be perfect to alter slightly and make a cute little backpack!
