Velocity Girl Bag

Velocity-Girl-Bag

I will be introducing two new patterns this week, and this is the first of the two! This pattern is called the Velocity Girl Bag. This is a confident-beginner level sewing pattern. It includes 15 pages of sewing instructions, 33 full-color step-by-step photos, and the templates needed to make the pattern. The pattern is available right now in my pattern shop!

I created this pattern with someone particular in mind, and it features front and side exterior pockets, an inner zippered pocket, and another divider pocking on the inside as well. The side pockets are small, so will hold little things. The bag closes with the use of a magnetic snap, and the strap is adjustable.

Finished Size: 14” long x 8-1/2” tall

Supplies Needed to Make this Bag
1 yard of Exterior Fabric
1 yard of Lining Fabric
1” x 25” strip of solid-colored fabric for piping on pockets
2 yards of Pellon® SF-101 Shape Flex® fusible woven interfacing
1/2 yard of By Annie’s Soft and Stable™, available at local quilt shops or on-line
(Soft and Stable is a 1/8” thick, foam sew-in interfacing; one of my testers also recommends automotive headliner fabric in place of the Soft and Stable; you can also substitute a needled fleece fusible interfacing for the Soft and Stable, such as Pellon #TP971F Thermolam Plus fusible interfacing)
1-1/2″ metal slider
1/2” magnetic snap
2” metal o-ring
10” zipper (or use a longer zipper and just trim it down after you’ve sewn it in)

I made this bag using fabric from Laurie Wisbrun’s ‘Tufted Tweets’ line for Robert Kaufman. This is probably one of my favorite all-time fabric lines.

Once again, my lovely testers followed through with some great comments about the bag and turned out some great results! Thank you again to you all for all of your hard work!!

Maria made this awesome version in Amy Butler Love fabrics! I think it turned out beautifully, and I love that pretty lining peaking out from the inside too! Wonderful!

Georgi used ‘Beyond the Gate’ fabrics for her bag…I think it looks absolutely amazing! I love how bright and structured this particular one looks!

Jessica made this awesome bag in Amy Butler fabrics! She’s loving her bag, and it’s the first time that she used the Soft and Stable, and it sounded like a huge thumbs-up! What a great result!!

Nancy made this great bag with a bright floral! I like the soft colors, and her bag has a great shape. I also like that the pocket piping is very distinct on her bag. If only we could get rid of that darn snow!!

Mhairi made this bag with a pink print main fabric, and some great butterfly fabric for the front pockets. I love her round slider too, very nice shape to this bag and great work Mhairi!

Jamie made her bag as a gift for her friend who is having a baby. I think this is great as a small diaper bag, and that print she chose is just darling!!

Gosia from Quilts My Way made this icy blue bag with the lovely polka dot trim. I think her bag turned out fantastic, and it has a very professionally-finished look to it. Great job!!! You can check out her blog post about her bag here!

Rebeckah of Handmade by Rebeckah made her bag in this fun spring fabric. I love the directional nature of the fabric across the length of the bag, I think it looks wonderful!!

Brenda made this awesome bag in black and gray fabric. I think this one turned out great, and with the coloring and the shape, I think it would be great to go with almost any outfit!

Annette made this gorgeous bag in Anna Maria Horner fabric! I love the bright pink piping that she added, I think it’s a great contrast to the fabric and really makes it stand out! Love it!!!

DeeAnn made this gorgeous silver bag for her daughter, and she also used the same fabrics to make a matching wallet and coin purse! What a fabulous set, and what a thoughtful mom. 🙂

Michelle made this great bag, and she finished it in time to use it at her daughter’s birthday party! What a great day to show off something pretty that you’ve made!!

Liz of Moments… made this lovely floral and cream-colored bag. I love the patchwork and quilting that she did on it! The quilting is very subtle, but it works really nicely with the blocks.

Peta actually made 2 bags, the silver and also the one with the dark orange accent fabric. Not only did she do a great job, but she provided some hilarious commentary on her tester notes (courtesy of her husband).

Patty made this bag with pink roses…and Patty just found out that her daughter is expecting, so congratulations grandma!!!!

Mona from Mona’s Box on Etsy made this great bright yellow and blue bag! I think this shot perfectly shows off that side panel, and she did a fabulous job fussy cutting her fabrics too!!

Nanette made this awesome version in Melody Miller fabrics! Melody is one of my favorite designers, and I think these fabrics look just awesome on this bag! Very 80’s looking, especially with the colors (would be perfect at the QuiltCon 80’s party this week)! Great job!!

Kimberlee made this great black, gray, and white version, and she put lots of her things inside the bag, just so you can see how much it can tote! Very versatile, and a lovely job on this one!!

Mhairi made this bag in contrasting fabrics for the pockets, main portion, and lining of the bag. I particularly love the busy print peaking out from the lining! Great work!!

Liana made this pretty floral combined with the polka dots. The floral fabric is just beautiful, and I like that the front pocket is broken up with the gray piping that she chose. A soft pretty bag with a great shape!!

Jennifer from Taken Patiently made this beautiful bag in Amy Butler fabrics. I love how this one turned out, and it’s a great combination of fabric and solid too!!

Alyson made this great sage and powder blue floral using an upholstery fabric. She used Thermolam on her bag, and she quilted it to make it sturdier. I think it came out amazing!!

Maire made this beautiful floral with coordinating green and blue fabrics. I thought it was great that she mixed the blue print in, as it really calls attention to the front pocket! Just awesome!!

Kristi made this beautiful dark floral and chocolate version of the bag. Kristi was hard-core about her pattern-testing…she had a personal emergency come up and she still e-mailed me many photos of her bag and her review, all well within the timeframe. Thank you again Kristi!!

Lindsay made this bag with some great fabric, and you can also see very meticulous workmanship, as the bag is pressed and beautiful. Lovely lovely job, and there’s that sloping side panel!

If you’re interested in purchasing this pattern, it’s available right now in my pattern shop via instant download. A couple of the testers commented that it took them an evening of sewing, so you could have a new bag before you know it!

So this is somewhat unrelated but does anyone know what fabric is under the bag Annette made in Anna Maria Horner fabric? It really looks like some 18th century reproduction fabric I have been looking for. All the bags here are beautiful!

Hi, it’s actually a tablecloth I bought in Italy several years ago. The fabrics and textiles are great in Italy. This was bought at a roadside stall as we were wandering around. The label says Cotton House.

This purse is great, as you already know. 🙂 And the testers did a great job giving more of an idea of what kind of fabric combinations to use.

    Thanks!! 🙂

Gotta love a lot of pockets! This will give you a giggle though, I started the new job last week and for the first time in my life I have a laptop instead of a desktop to use. My boss, after realising that they hadn’t given me a bag with it, told me to go out and buy one and expense it. I wondered aloud if I could just expense myself to make one, which led to the following reply:

‘Make one?! Of course you can’t make one, it’s a laptop bag. Make one. Really!’

His face was a total picture, he just could not comprehend being able to make a bag yourself.

  4. It’s so cute! I love that fabric! You have been working hard!

Thanks for the chance to test this bag Sara, it is a great pattern and I hope that it sells really well. It is so adaptable and a perfect size for sewing projects, trips to the shops or just a daily bag to take to work. Thanks again.

Another great bag. And I do think I can make this one.
I sent one of my co-workers over to see the blog and look at all your great bags. Maybe we can try one together.

  9. Wonderful, and again the testers did you proud xxx

Love this bag. All gorgeous versions!

How difficult would it be to put a zipper top in this bag instead of the snap closure? I love the pattern, but I always need a zip top because I am clumsy. I haven’t made a purse before, but I have been sewing other things for years.

Comments make my day and I love to reply!
