I actually spoke with Melody and her husband about her book at Quilt Market in Houston this past October, and she was clearly very excited about it. I got my copy of the book 2 weeks before at Sewing Summit, so I had had a chance to read through it on the plane ride home. I think it’s really an original idea. With the whole climate of the online sewing community, it is very common that we are sending things to each other (bee blocks, swap pillows, Flickr swap fabric, etc.), and I often get things wrapped nicely in ribbon or what-not, so it is just natural that people would also be interested in dressing up their handmade (or store-bought) gifts with creative wrapping.

You can clearly see how much work went into the book; from all the photographs, to the personal thoughts on the projects, to the different ways to personalize each project to make it your own. There are seriously so many great ideas within these pages.
If you saw photographs of Melody’s booth at Market, I think her attention to detail in the booth (vintage Fisher Price toys under the Christmas tree, the old television set, the couches, the little figures) translates to her work and also to this book. The book was a real treat and I enjoy having it.
Pocketed Apron

So anyway, my project for the Wrap-Along was the Pocketed Apron. I chose this project because I thought it would be really useful (actually for myself, lol). I work in a rather tight sewing space, and it really irks me always having to turn around and grab this supply or that supply (most commonly my Frixion pens, scissors, and seam ripper). I thought it might make things a bit calmer for me if I could just dump the supplies in this lovely apron and keep them on hand.

The pattern instructions inside the book noted that it took one of the pattern testers about 15 minutes to complete this project, and that’s probably about accurate if you have your fabrics cut and ready to go. I used 1/2 yard of main fabric and scraps for the ties. I sewed the dividers on my pocket to fit the scissors, 2 pens, and the seam ripper, and I also went with the fabric sashing option as opposed to a ribbon tie at the waist (the scrap of fabric that I wanted to use for the ties was a little bit small, so the ties ended up 2-1/2″ wide finished size).

All-in-all, this is a great project and would also be great to make for a child (to hold art supplies, action figures, whatever)!!

If you are sewing along with us, you can also link up your completed projects at the Sew, Mama, Sew Ruby Star Wrapping Contest! Head over there for more details, there are some awesome prizes!!
