Peacock Alley Quilt and a GIVEAWAY!

This post contains referral links. Read the full disclosure here.

It’s been a looong while since I’ve made a quilt, but I really missed it and I have to admit it felt soo good making one over the weekend! This is ‘Peacock Alley’, a quilt pattern from John Kubiniec‘s new book, A New Spin on Drunkard’s Path, available from the C&T Publishing website and of course available on Amazon. I was provided an ebook advance copy of the book. The book contains the patterns for 12 quilts, all using the great drunkard’s path block. I’ve always been fascinated with this block because of the curved piecing. I’m also a big fan of the medallion quilt (check out the Marcelle Medallion quilt that I made 3 years ago).

The ‘Peacock Alley’ quilt definitely didn’t disappoint! I spent a lot of time choosing fabrics; since Halloween is coming up, I knew I wanted to use fabrics from my stash of Tula Pink‘s out-of-print ‘Nightshade’ fabric line (by the way, if you’re ever looking to sell any Nightshade prints, I’m buying – just sayin’!). The difficulty is that I have a limited amount of each print, and so I had to choose my fabrics based on the requirements of the quilt and what I had available. However, this quilt pattern really is the perfect feature for the large-scale main print. Besides the Nightshade prints, I used Kona black for the background and I snuck in a fabric from Tula’s ‘Elizabeth’ line (the blue and white stripe, which seemed particularly witchy).

John’s book works great with the Marti Michell Drunkard’s Path templates (although templates are included in the pages of the book also), although I completely forgot that I had the Marti Michell acrylic templates and used the templates from the book, which I copied on my home printer and cut out. Apparently I don’t like to take the easy way out.

The first 5 rows went together super quickly. John’s instructions are awesome and he gives tips for simple things like direction of pressing (or holding off pressing the curves until you assemble the rows, so that you can nest them) that were very helpful. There’s also instructions for adding mitered corners (if you are using striped fabric) for some of the rows. The last row probably took the same amount of time as all of the other rows combined, just because the last row is pieced stripes combined with drunkard’s path piecing.

I was just so pleased when the quilt was finished – sometimes I hold my breath until the end of a project to see if my fabric choices worked or not, and I think these definitely did because I am in love with this quilt! These days, I don’t make quilts very often, so it is so great to have a new quilt in the house! I am planning on having it longarmed and backed with Shannon cuddle minky (either purple or teal). Steffani does an amazing job quilting with minky!
