Stitch Fix Box #1

This post contains referral links. Read the full disclosure here.

I admit that I struggle with clothes. I never buy anything for myself besides t-shirts/tank tops and jeans because whenever I see anything in the store, I think, “Oh, I could make that”, or “Oh that’s so simple, I’ll just make that myself.” But guess what? Having a family and a busy life means that I find it hard to find time to sew clothing for myself. And on top of not having time, I pile on the guilt because I usually look so casual that I’m teetering on the line of being a slob. So not only do I not feel that great about how I look, but I feel guilty because I don’t have time to sew a lot of my own clothing. It’s kind of a vicious cycle.

I went on vacation last week, and before I left, I ordered my first box from Stitch Fix. Stitch Fix is a service that sends a box of 5 pieces of clothing to your door, at a time interval that you choose (once a month, every other month, etc.). You fill out a short survey about your body (shoe size, pant size, etc.) and let Stitch Fix know what kinds of clothing that you like (I looked at several images of a selection of wardrobe styles and clicked if I hated the outfits, liked them, loved them, etc.). FYI if you’re looking for a plus-size clothing subscription box, check out Dia instead. They asked some other questions, such as what colors of clothing I do not like (I checked ‘beige’). I left a note for my stylist that I work from home and so I prefer casual attire, but that I like bright colors and I love polka dots.

Now, I have never been contacted by this company to write a blog post or anything of that nature. I wanted to do this for me and write truthfully about how I felt in regards to the items that came in the box. I fully expected to receive the box, try everything on, and then pack it up and send it back, assuming that I could not possibly like any clothing that someone else picked out for me.

Boy, was I wrong.

Upon first opening up my Stitch Fix box, the clothing was wrapped in tissue paper and the pair of shoes that I got came in a drawstring bag. There was an envelope with a card that contained a personalized message about why my personal stylist chose these items for me, cards to show me how I could pair each of the items with things from my closet to create a full outfit, and an invoice with the cost of each item. I will note that you’re not required to keep any of the items in the box, but if you send everything back without keeping anything, there is a $20 styling fee. The styling fee is waived if you keep any item. Also, if you keep the full box (5 items), a discount of 25% off is deducted from your order. Just some things to keep in mind.

My Stitch Fix box included a pair of shoes, a pair of pants, and 3 tops. NOTHING in the box was anything that I would ever check out at a clothing store and consider buying. HOWEVER, upon trying everything on 1) everything fit perfectly, and 2) I loved everything. I think this speaks to trying things outside of my comfort zone.

I could tell that the stylist really paid attention to the profile that I filled out, because everything was a bright color (no beige!), and she even left a note that she included one of the tops because she saw that I liked polka dots! I thought that was pretty cool and the note that the stylist wrote for me was personal; I did not feel that it was a cookie cutter note that the other subscribers all received.

So my first item was a blue button-down light top with an interesting neckline. Now I must say that I do not own any button-down tops. I personally don’t care for them, and I feel like they are too formal for me. I pulled the top over my head, rolling my eyes, and walked over to the mirror. Okay, get those eyes unrolled because this top is amazing! I’m sold – please get me more of these in every color of the rainbow. Great fit, loose and comfortable, and fits the bill in every way. I paired this top with a pair of jeans (my favorite jeans are the Denizen jeans from Target because they fit great – they are made for girls with a bit of curve on the bottom) because I wanted to keep just the right amount of casual. The shoes are from Target as well, I purchased them at the beginning of the summer.

My next item is another thing that I would never choose for myself in a million years. However, after pulling the pants out of the box, I was intrigued because I saw that there was no zip closure – these pants are pull on. They are stretchy! But when I put them on, they looked like a pair of pants that had a zipper in them, and not sloppy in the least. The color is interesting but I found them to be really cool because they are so unique! I paired the pants with a knit top that I got from an Express Outlet Store.

I really love wedge shoes from Toms (I have 3 pairs), so I was excited to see a pair of silver Toms flats in the package. My daughter loved them also and wanted a pair just like them. These are a keeper – really pretty and comfortable.

This was the polka dot top that my stylist enclosed in the package just for me. It’s sheer, so I’m wearing a blue tank top underneath it. I don’t own anything like this in my closet, and it’s a really fun outfit that I’m looking forward to wearing this fall. Again, it’s light, loose, and comfortable. It’s got a drawstring at the neckline, and I paired it with a pair of jeans.

Now on to my most favorite top! This is a black and white tank with a decorative sheer cut out at the neckline. I love the print, I love the colors, and the fit is great too (it’s loose, but a bit more fitted around the bust than some of my other loose tops). The sheer cut out is just awesome. I can’t say enough good things about this top. I’m wearing it with a pair of black Ponte knit pants from Express Outlet.

Thanks for sticking with me through my run-down of my first Stitch Fix box. I don’t usually write posts like this about ready-made clothes, but I thought this might help some people that struggle with choosing clothing like I do. Have you tried Stitch Fix already? What do you think about it? I’m curious how it works out for different body shapes.

Fun! I totally agree that they send things that are a little different and outside of your comfort zone, but somehow those items just work. My boxes got better after I shared a Pinterest board that I had filled with pictures of various styles that I like and pictures from their blog posts as well. I also discovered that you can specifically request items that you see on their blog posts or items that were shared by others stitch fix customers. They did a great job on your first box. Everything looks awesome!

Thank you for sharing. The clothes do look great, and this helps “humanize” Stitch Fix a bit, lol!

  6. Thanks so much for sharing this! I’ve seen a lot of stitch fix reviews, but I’d never seen the link to Dia (I’m plus size), so I got so excited. I ordered my first box today, we’ll see how it goes!!

Glad to hear I am not the only one who thinks “I could sew this myself” and then doesn’t have time to sew everything for herself!!!!!!!!! You look great in your new clothes. Thanks for sharing.

I’m off in search of an Australian equivalent. I love those tops and a colorful pant is such a great surprise. You look fantastic and I love that the stylist has stretched you a little too.

Would you mind sharing the brand of the pink pants? I ABSOLUTELY love them, and although I already subscribe to Stitch Fix, that has not made into my packages yet. I want to try to get it. Thank you!

  10. You look great! I also love your tattoo! I don’t think I’ve noticed it before! 🙂
I tried Stitch Fix in the past, but canceled because I felt like the clothes were always a bit too pricey. This post makes me want to try again, though, because I love everything you got!

You look absolutely adorable in everything!

I received my first box today. Unfortunately most of the pieces were not what I wanted.
I wear petite clothes. There was one top and a pair of jeans that were petite.
I have short arms and need petite tops.
I want 3/4 or long sleeve tops. No horizontal stripes. No short sleeves
The jeans were too long. Maybe a 12p would fit better

I will try another time in 1 month
