Reisende Bag Release

I’m happy to introduce you to the Reisende Bag sewing pattern, available in both paper pattern and pdf pattern formats! This pattern includes 3 different size bags, from purse-sized all the way through a large bag perfect for your carry-on luggage! A buckle and purse hardware make this a snazzy bag, and add some optional piping for added visual interest.

My cover samples were made in Latifah Saafir’s new line of fabric for Hoffman’s Me + You imprint. The line is called ‘Grafic’ and it is chock full of urban imagery. I love it! I really like that this fabric line contains large and small scale prints that work so well together. The monochromatic prints (the bricks and chain link fence prints are absolutely awesome!!) are amazing blenders. Thanks so much to Terry for helping to sew the cover samples (Terry sewed the gray and white bags!).

The bag has a top-zip closure (I used handbag zippers in the samples, although there is information in the pattern if you would like to use a regular dress/skirt zipper) and two zippered pockets in the lining. Check out that red brick lining! Amiright?!

I wanted this pattern to give the opportunity to try out some buckled straps; there are several methods within the pattern for attaching the holes for the buckles. I definitely think the hardware on the front of the bag is the main event.

Here’s my pink original version of the bag in size large, pictured below. I used ‘Geo Pop Canvas’ fabric and some sparkle vinyl from MiKri World.

I also made this lovely green size medium Reisende Bag version for my friends for Quilt Market; this was in a booth in the Moda Fabrics section, for Franny and Jane’s line called ‘Manderley‘. I think it’s gorgeous and I love the tiled print! It looks so good with the green vinyl (which I got lucky and found just about a perfect match).

I hope you enjoyed reading some details about the Reisende Bag sewing pattern! Now on to the testers’ bags – as always they are doing brilliant work!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag, sewn by Kristy of Rock Baby ScissorsKristy of Rock Baby Scissors made this bag for Quilt Market in an upcoming Lotta Jansdotter fabric. The white sparkle vinyl with the print is stunning and gives the bag a really modern look! Visit Kristy’s website if you’re interested in a custom-made bag!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag, sewn by Amber of Roar HausAmber of Roar Haus made the small-sized bag in Heather Ross Mendocino fabrics with white sparkle vinyl. The small is a great size for a large handbag, and this beauty certainly fits the ticket for that! It’s amazing! Amber also custom-makes bags, check out her site here!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag, sewn by Sarah of Yo Rebel WomanSarah of Yo Rebel Woman made her bag using a great print from the Geo Pop canvas line (which is so great for large graphic prints) and some red vinyl that she picked up at a garage sale. She modified the bag to add side slip pockets. Fantastic work Sarah!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by Michele of The Undiscovered Optimist
This medium version was made by Michele of The Undiscovered Optimist in denim paired with a bright solid and pop of Tula Pink fabric. What a great way to flip things by making the denim the main feature of the bag!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag, sewn by Christine
Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by ChristineChristine made her bag in a texty Cotton+Steel fabric with red accents and strapping. Rivets and metal eyelets add a great touch to this bag! She made a second bag in this great damask print in the size small version.

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by Alisha of Crafty Brooklyn Army WifeAlisha of Crafty Brooklyn Army Wife made this beachy-themed bag, which is just perfect for summer. I think this bag has a lot of possibilities, but I can picture myself packing clothes and swimsuits for a weekend at the beach or waterpark resort! Read more on her blog!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by DanaDana made this awesome silver metallic bag – I think this is a great combination of fabrics and perfect with every outfit. And metallic!!!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by Rook and HookAnne Marie of Rook and Hook made a big splash with her Tula Pink ‘True Colors’ bag! I really like the textured nylon fabric with the hardware – it looks that bit of extra special! Great job Anne Marie!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by CydneeCydnee made this super stylish Reisende, and changed up the hardware a little with swivel clips and d-rings! While the buckles look great too, if your comfort level allows, feel free to swap out buckles for what you have on hand (or recycling hardware from a thrifted bag is another idea!). Beautiful work Cydnee!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by PieraPiera made this small-version, super-hero sized! I think that the blue sparkle vinyl is just perfect with the fabric – I love it and I can see a lot of people wanting this bag!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by ChristineChristine (follow her on Instagram!) made the small-sized Reisende Bag. Instead of leaving her sparkle vinyl raw, Christine sewed the sparkly vinyl components right sides together, as you would for woven fabrics. She said with some clipping and patience, she was able to turn the pieces right side out, and they look amazing! Great idea for the vinyl, Christine!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag, sewn by Maria of Beautiful BloomsMaria of Beautiful Blooms made her bag in an Anna Maria Horner fabric from her stash. Using a contrasting thread color on the vinyl is a nice touch to make the strapping stand out.

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag, sewn by KimKim made her bag for Kim Kight’s booth this past Quilt Market trade show, for her upcoming line for Cotton+Steel called ‘Rotary Club’. I think these fabrics pair really well with the potential vintage feel of this bag!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by Emmalei KaiEmmalei Kai made this bag in gorgeous Leah Duncan fabric paired with dark coordinating vinyl and beautiful hardware. I think this bag is really stunning and the vertical repeat of the fabric is perfectly placed on this size bag! Great job!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by PamPam made her bag in a bright sunny mosaic fabric, and the structure of this one looks so beautiful! I love the shape of the hardware and the touch of the leather tassel! Great job Pam!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag sewing pattern, sewn by AnjaAnja (follow her on Instagram!) made her bag with a cotton fabric that looks almost leather-like. Quilting cotton is my most favorite substrate to use when bag-making, and the easiest to sew with as well. I love this mint-colored bag by Anja!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag, sewn by Leigh Anne of Ella's CottageLeigh Anne from Ella’s Cottage used Jungle Ave. fabric and black vinyl – I super love the choice of the metal zipper, I think it adds edge to this edgy fabric and vinyl look! Beautiful work Leigh Anne!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag, sewn by LynnLynn made the medium-sized version of the Reisende Bag using a gorgeous houndstooth and bright blue for all of the other components of the bag. This is so stunning! Great work Lynn!

Sew Sweetness Reisende Bag, sewn by LoriLori made the size medium in a cute Mickey and Minnie fabric with black sparkle vinyl. She used gold matching hardware and rivets for all of the components of the bag. Beautiful Lori!

I’m a new sewer, so bags scare me. I purchased Windy City Bags, and I LOVE it. The instructions are really clear, even for me. Someday, when my 4-year-old isn’t pawing at me, I’m going to start AND finish my first bag. I can’t wait to add this pattern to my to-do list as well.

Does anyone know if we can order the the wheels and handle system for a “pull along” bag? The larger version of this one would be a great candidate to be pulled similar to luggage.

    1. Trisha says:

I love this idea! I started googling and found https://ohiotravelbag.com/Default.aspx for the pull handles and wheels. I’m going to try this over the next couple months. I’ll let you know how it goes.
