Hi everyone!  I’m really excited Sara asked me to do a Craftsy review, they have such great classes!  First, I had to make the tough decision of which one!  I picked Maureen Cracknell’s Quick Quilt-As-You-Go, I’ve wanted to learn his technique for a while and I thought actually seeing it, as opposed to just having a book, would help me out a lot!

I really like that this class is beginner friendly and Maureen starts the first project by giving you a lot of tips.  Maureen does the class in a way that is really informative, but doesn’t make you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing or like she is talking above you.  I think I am an intermediate/advanced sewer, but I have never used this technique, so it was nice to learn it without feeling stupid!  The biggest tip (in my mind) is to use 100% cotton batting, so it doesn’t melt when you’re ironing it, this is the kind of thing I wouldn’t have thought of!  Maureen also goes at a good pace and speaks clear and concisely.

Lesson 1 is a placemat (see below), which is super simple and beginner friendly!  It is basic strips, sewing in straight lines, trimmed rectangular and bound.  They are easy and super cute!  Lesson 2 is a table runner, which is basically the same thing as the place mats, but longer.  After this lesson you have a whole dining set!  This would be a great idea to make and change out for the holidays, or even as gift sets for the holidays!

Lesson 3 is the diamond string pillow, which I actually made (see below)!  I really love how it turned out!  If you make this, I do have a cutting suggestion: I would personally cut the 28 strips at 2.5″ x 14.5″, as I had to add an extra 2″ strip to each quadrant of mine to cover the 7.5″ x 14.5″ batting.  I read in the comments that a few other people had the same problem.  If you use a jelly roll, most of the cutting is already done for you!  I also like my pillows turned right side out, not bound, so that was the only change I made!  This pillow came together in about 2 hours, including cutting if you use a jelly roll.  I think the most time consuming thing was quilting the backing, I did somewhat matchstick quilting.  I was super skeptical when I was watching the videos every time Maureen would just smooth the fabric over and then sew another strip, I kept wondering how the heck that worked in the end!  As I was sewing and smoothing, I was thinking “this isn’t going to work in the end, I’m going to press it and it’s going to have puckers and look awful!”  But, when I had all the strips sewn down and I went to the iron and pressed, I was in awe!  It was so pretty!  After I turned the pillow right side out, I was so impressed and happy with my pillow that my mind started wandering to all the things I could quilt-as-you-go!

Lesson 4 is a herringbone lap quilt and Lesson 5 is a crisscross diamond quilt.  I’m awful at FMQ and really hate the quilting part of quilts, so I am really excited to try this down the road!  I think it would be especially great for a baby quilt and it would make it go so much faster!  Lesson 6 is inspiring project ideas, in which Maureen gives even more ideas!  I really love the flying geese table runner (below)!!!!!  I think this would be cute as a baby quilt with sashing between the rows!!  After this though, I have my own ideas!  I love making coasters and zip pouches and I really think I could use this technique to do this!!

I have a few strips that I would love to turn them to placemats or a table runner, and would love basically to try make all the projects Maureen presented.
