I’m really excited to share with you a FREE clutch pattern that I wrote, the Discotech Clutch! You can find the pattern right now here!
PATTERN – Discotech Clutch
I try to write 1 free pattern a year because I like to invite sewists that are new to my patterns to give them a try, and give them a taste of what my patterns look like and what my instructional style is like. The Discotech Clutch is a confident beginner level pattern which will also give you practice using purse hardware that makes the use of screws (these metal ovals are installed with screws, as well as twist locks, thumb catches, etc.).
I made two samples of the clutch to show you how versatile this pattern can be. The first sample was made in Tula Pink ‘Chipper’ fabrics, which are due out in March. I can’t wait for this line because the colors are so dreamy and of course the artwork is superb! The second sample was made in a pebbled faux leather in a seafoam green color. I have other faux leathers and corks in my shop.
The clutch measures 12″ long x 8″ tall and is great for a night out with just a few essentials. There are topstitched pockets in the lining.
Here are the supplies that are needed to make the clutch:
- 1 fat quarter or 1/4 yard of Exterior Fabric
- 1/2 yard of Lining Fabric
- 1/2 yard of 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or light-weight fusible interfacing)
- 1/4 yard of foam interfacing (By Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, Bosal In-R-Form, or automotive headliner; if using Flex Foam, it is only 20” wide so please purchase double the amount)
- Two 3-1/2” metal oval cut-out handles – you can find the handles here
- 1/2” magnetic snap
- Fabric glue
While this is a quick sewing project, if you’re new to installing hardware that screws in, you’ll want to use a little bit of extra patience. I offer some helpful tips in the pattern for making the installation of the oval handles go smoothly!
I hope you enjoyed this pattern! I think it would make a great gift for yourself or someone you love! You can download the free pattern here.
You are so kind and yes it looks like a new sewer will love this clutch and the hardware makes it stand out
Those big ovals look awfully familiar! They look like the ones on the hardware list for the February pattern of BOMC…
Very sweet pattern Sara! I love the faux leather!
I downloaded the Discotech Clutch pattern.
I love this cute little clutch. I downloaded this pattern. I’m thinking of making it in a navy suede.
where on your site can I order the 3 1/2 inch metal cut out handles? Just got your book thanks for the signing – love the patterns. Karen
Thank you for the freebie, Sara! Where did you find your grommet/handle? I have found one with the tabs that fold over, but the screw-in type is so much more professional. I’d love to know where you got yours, so I can buy one/some as well! Thank you!
I am also looking for the handles. I thought I would find them here with the pattern.
Happy Creating
I am interested in knowing where they came from as well- thank you!
I cannot find the oval grommets for the Discotech purse. Where can I find?
