Purse Palooza 2015 at Sew Sweetness

Hi lovelies,
It’s a pleasure to be on Sara’s blog this month during the Purse Palooza, my favourite time of the year!

Today I’m going to be sharing some thoughts about the Sew Sweetness Creative Maker case, and who I made mine for!

I have a very good friend who’s recently taken up the hobby of lock picking. He asked me if I could make him a case for his picks and sent me some pictures of what he was currently using.

Aye Carumba, we can do better than that!

Thank goodness for Sara’s Creative Maker case, it’s perfect to adjust for what my friend needs.

I chose to make the Small size and I used spacer fabric. It’s similar to what they use for running shoes. It’s a grey mesh on one side and then black foam underneath, bonded together to make one fabric. I paired it with black mesh and black cotton and added a black twin slider zip. My friend was very specific in that I wasn’t to use anything bright or girly!

Because the outer fabric has foam as part of it’s structure I omitted the outer stabiliser, but still used medium weight interfacing for the lining pieces.

During construction I used tailors tacks in a contrasting thread to mark the centre of each panel as it was the only thing I could see on the fabric. Sometimes we get so caught up in our modern inventions (Chaco liner!) that we forget the traditional methods are sometimes best!

Here’s the finished case with my friends picks installed. Apparently his collection tripled in the time it took me to get around to making his new case, oops, maybe I should have made the large!

The outer fabric makes it look really slick, my friend was chuffed with his new pick case. He assures me he will only use his skills for good!

The Creative Maker case takes very little fabric, it’s very economical. It only needs one FQ for the outer, one for the lining and another for the pockets for all sizes, I actually made the small out of less than that.

The pattern comes with 11 pages of detailed instructions and colour photos, and a further 3 pages of full size pattern pieces which you can use to cut on the fold.

If my friend reads this it’s helpful to note that it took me weeks and weeks to make it, if you’re not the friend in question then you should know that it actually only took me one afternoon of sewing….and a fortnight of getting around to sewing it!

The potential for these little cases is endless, I’ve seen some really fun ones around, but I’m pleased I had a very simple brief, I think it looks very professional!

How will you use yours?

I bought this pattern recently to make my little brother a case for his pens (he draws zen doodle type drawings) for Christmas. I’m just waiting on the fabric to arrive now!

This is gorgeous! I’ve been looking for an idea for “masculine” bags and I think the spacer fabric will make for a nice techy look. I also appreciate the reminder about tailor’s tacks. I’ve been working with a lot of dark fabrics lately and that never occurred to me. 🙂
