Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouches sewing pattern

It’s pattern release day! I still get excited about putting out a new sewing pattern, and I think this is a really special one. This is the Filigree Double-Zip Pouches sewing pattern, available in my pattern shop as either a pdf or paper pattern, and coming soon to your favorite retailer or quilt shop!

Filigree is a 3-dimensional pouch with the unique feature of having 2 zippers at the top, each with a completely separate compartment for storage. It has a side panel/bottom and will stand up on its own, making it the perfect take-along pouch for your sewing supplies, toiletries, basically anything that you can think of.

My cover samples were made with Tula Pink ‘Chipper’ fabrics, out March 2016 in stores. Tula is my favorite fabric designer and these fabrics are just beyond brilliant. Each of the fabrics have a great focal design and the colors are sherbet-y and beautiful. The grosgrain ribbons on the front of the pouches are also designed by Tula Pink in the Chipper designs for Renaissance Ribbons.

This is a quick and satisfying project (minus the quilting, one pouch could be completed in about 2 hours according to one of my pattern testers) and perfect for swap gifts or presents for friends and family.

Supplies (will make 1 pouch)

  • 1/2 yard of Exterior Fabric (if using ribbon I suggest using a small or solid print, which will make the ribbon stand out)
  • Two different fat quarters for the lining
  • 18” x 26” piece of foam interfacing (By Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, or Bosal In-R-Form)
  • Two zippers, I suggest two different colors      (small – 9”;     medium – 12”;     large – 12”)
*regular 3# zippers should be used here – the zipper tape should be slightly more than 7/8″ wide

If choosing to use ribbon, also add these supplies:

  • 1” x 20” piece of solid fabric for piping around ribbons
  • 20” long piece of 5/32” cotton cording
  • Pellon Wonder Under 1/2” wide tape (or double-sided fusible web tape)
  • Optional: Grosgrain ribbon (I used Renaissance Ribbons designed by Tula Pink) –
-I recommend either 1-7/8”, 1-1/2”, or 7/8” wide ribbon for the center stripe (10” long)
-I recommend 5/8” wide ribbon for the left and right sides (20” long)
*feel free to use a different width of ribbon if you prefer, these are just my suggestions

The pdf version of the pattern is 12 pages long, complete with 27 full-color photos, and the paper pattern is a 12-page booklet with the same color photos and easy-to-understand instructions.

While the machine quilting on the exterior pieces of the pouch are completely optional, I think it gives a nice finish. There are instructions in the pattern for the quilting as seen on my samples, including design and suggested stitch length, in case you’d like to do that.

Here’s a look at all of the lovely pouches that my pattern testers produced! Thank you to all of the hard work you all have put in…and dare I say that the hard work paid off as they all look beautiful! Thank you also to Renaissance Ribbons for contributing ribbons for many of my testers’ pouches. There are examples of both pouches with and without ribbons, just to give you some inspiration for making either option!

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by Mrs. H.Samantha of Sewing Patterns by Mrs. H. took time off her busy sewing pattern designing to test my bag! She made the large pouch, with some Tula Pink Renaissance Ribbons and a great metal zip pull on the end. Samantha is using her pouch for a nappy changing bag, and says that it fits all of her diaper-changing essentials. Perfect!

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouches, sewn by Bree of My Crafty CrapBree of My Crafty Crap made all three sizes of the Filigree Double-Zip Pouch! She used the ribbon on her size medium. This is a beautiful photo to show the size difference of all three! Great job Bree!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESSAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESMy dear Liz from Moments… made her pouches in faux suede and faux leather, respectively, and added some beautiful machine embroidery to the front of each before assembly. Liz is the master at making bags with leather-like materials and these are just beyond gorgeous.

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by Mary on Lake PulaskiMary on Lake Pulaski made her pouch and it’s stunning (or maybe it’s my blinding love for polka dots!). Great combination of ribbons, solid, polka dots and zippers, and it’s pressed to perfection!

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by DebbieDebbie made the medium pouch with some super-creative quilting, first echoing the cacti print in the fabric, then fading to diamonds. I love it and the use of the neon zippers really make the pouch stand out!

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by TracyTracy from I’ve Got A Notion made the small size pouch with Renaissance Ribbons. I like the play of the three main colors that she used in her pouch (turquoise, pink, and yellow) and that these were repeated in each aspect of the pouch. Beautiful work and what a darling zippy pouch!

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch sewn by TerrySew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by TerryTerry made the medium pouch in Alison Glass fabrics and used a vertical stripe of Renaissance Ribbons by Tula Pink. Gorgeous finish on the pouch and I love that the flecks of coral in the owl are picked up by the background fabric. The second pouch is the small size in more purple Tula Pink.

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by Mary HelenMary Helen made her pouch in a turtle fabric (she loves turtles!). It’s really cute, and the primary colored zips match the fabrics and lining perfectly, what a great pouch!

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by VanessaVanessa made her pouch in a black background fabric with white thread for the quilting, which really makes the jewel tones in the ribbons stand out. Corners look perfect, and Vanessa’s added ribbon zipper pulls and some handbag bling! Really gorgeous, yay Vanessa!

Great idea Alli, and I do agree this would make a cute little purse!

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by Jessy of Auntie MatterJessy of Auntie Matter made the medium size pouch with some great neutral ribbons. Really great finish, and the quilting is pretty but without overwhelming the fabric. Super Jessy!

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by Reece of Happy OkapiReece of Happy Okapi made her pouch in a great silver vinyl, which she quilted. Reece recommends if using vinyl, to consider maybe using cotton fabric for the zipper tabs. She was able to stuff a ton of toiletry items in her large-size pouch! Fantastic!

filigree pouch 1 - sovanisa sovanisa filigree instagram 2Pamela of Sovanisa made two pouches, small and medium respectively. Pamela used pleating that she used from a book by Betz White called Present Perfect, and for the soccer pouch used a print of fabric with an embroidered letter on the front, and some quilting. Amazing work on both, and you can read more on Pamela’s blog right here.

Sew Sweetness Filigree Double-Zip Pouch, sewn by LianaLiana made the large pouch in a whimsical owl print. She said that the pouch took about 5 hours to make (which includes the 1 hour that she said she needed to choose fabrics, lol!). She’s looking forward to directing her 13-year-old sewing student to make this one soon. Very cute and great work, Liana!
