Tula Pink ‘Free Fall’ and ‘Eden’ Projects

Tula Pink Eden Brochure

If you’ve followed my blog for a bit of time, you probably know that Tula Pink is my very favorite fabric designer. I buy every fabric line that she comes out with (each shelf in my stash is devoted to a line) and when I see out-of-print fabrics that I need more of, I buy those too. Basically, I use up a Tula Pink fabric and try my best to replace it so that in my mind I will always have a bit of every print. Insane, I know. And the scariest part is that she hasn’t paid me to say any of this.

I made a bunch of projects with ‘Free Fall’ (108″ wide quilt backs, but they’re great for bags and clothes too) and ‘Eden’ back in April, both of which are in shops now. I thought it would be a better time to blog about the projects when you can find the fabrics. Many of my sponsors have ‘Free Fall’ and ‘Eden’ in stock, among them are Pink Castle Fabrics, Stash Fabrics, Gotham Quilts, Lady Belle Fabric, Crimson Tate, and Fat Quarter Shop.

Tula Pink Free Fall

Free Fall came out first (these are the 108″ wide quiltbacks), and when Tula first sent me the red and green prints to make dresses out of, I asked her… “Wait a minute, these are sateens” (if you didn’t know, sateens are AMAZING for garments because they have a thicker hand and are sometimes slightly…only slightly…shiny). She corrected me and they are actually quilting cottons with a chintz coating that is actually polished down. Crazy amazing. I want all my quilts backed with Free Fall retroactively, haha.

Tula Pink Free Fall Dress by Sew Sweetness

I made this dress for Tula’s booth at Quilt Market in the green Free Fall print. Here’s a photo of me wearing it side-by-side with a photo of the dress in the booth. The flower on the neckline is the icing on the cake! The pattern I used to make the dress was the By Hand London Kim dress with a circle skirt hack. Even though the circle skirt eats up a lot of fabric, I was able to make this dress with about 3/4″ yard of the 108″ wideback. Really cool.

Tula very generously sent me another piece of Free Fall to make something for me to wear at Market, and so I made this pretty red dress. I used a Butterick pattern by Gertie which I’ve made 3 times already.

My favorite detail of this dress is the shirring on the side panel. Really neat!

I’m still thinking about using Free Fall to make a gigantic bag…I bet it would look amazing as an Aeroplane Bag (one of each color!).

I was lucky enough to make a few projects out of Eden, too.

Sew Sweetness Sloan Travel Bag

This is the Sloan Travel Bag, which I made with this great print from Eden called ‘Mosaic’. This bag is gigantic and features this print really well. I labored over fussy-cutting the front zippered pocket (can you even notice the difference? It’s hard to tell from the photo, lol).

Tula Pink Eden, with bags by Sew Sweetness

This is a stylized shot that Tula shot for her Quilt Market brochure with my bags…she’s really great at styling photos!

Sew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag

My Ansel Camera Bag pattern also featured several prints from Eden, and they look really great with Tula’s Renaissance Ribbons on the straps.

Here’s another shot from Tula’s house in which the Ansel Camera Bags appear…sigh. Tula even though we are about the same age, would you please adopt me so I can live in your house among your beautiful things? Please don’t tell her I said that…I sound like a stalker.

By the way, that quilt in the photo? It’s available as a FREE quilt pattern that Tula Pink designed. It was first available in her Quilt Market brochure, but being that she’s so lovely, the brochure with the free quilt pattern is available here.

Here’s a few other Eden projects made from my patterns. Clearly I love these fabrics.

Sew Sweetness Greenbacks Wallet Trio in Eden

Here’s my Greenbacks Wallet Trio pattern remade in Eden for my pattern cover.

Sew Sweetness Frou Frou Bag made with Tula Pink Eden - FREE bag pattern

This ‘Deity’ print with elephants really is a diamond in the rough…on first glance it looks like soft colors, but when you look closer you can see the elephants. Just gorgeous. I made this bag with my free Frou Frou Bag sewing pattern and added some green silk for the ruffles.

Sew Sweetness Tudor Bag sewing pattern made with Tula Pink Eden

Last one? lol. Here’s my Tudor Bag sewing pattern that I made with the main Tiger print from Eden. This is my favorite print from the line, of course as I love large-scale prints. I’m actually working with the purple colorway right now for another new pattern (here’s a look at some of the purple prints below)! But this Tudor Bag is just great as it combines several striking prints.

Sew Sweetness Skirt made with Tula Pink Eden

Also here’s a skirt that I left out of this post originally….I used a free quilt pattern by Tula Pink called Bird Seed to piece a large rectangle. I had the fabric quilted by Steffani K. Burton, and cut it up into a circle skirt. My top is also handmade (Ondee by Deer and Doe).

I wanted to show something that I didn’t make…I love this quilt that Jaybird Quilts made with Eden. Doesn’t it really showcase all of the colors so well? I just had to show you. You can read more about the Stereo Quilt on the Jaybird Quilts blog.

Well, that’s my look at ‘Free Fall’ and ‘Eden’! Clearly I hadn’t realized that I’d used these fabrics so much already. I bought a ton of it, so I can look forward to many more happy projects. Hope you like what you saw here! Which project was your favorite?

Wow! There’s no way I could pick just one. I love ALL the projects. Your dress making skills are exceptional. You’ve definitely perfected getting them to fit perfectly. My Mother taught me to sew when I was a little girl. She used to tell me that you could make a dress perfectly, but if it didn’t fit well it was all a waste of time….because it wouldn’t look professional when you wore it. Good Job!!!!

It is so wonderful to see young women wearing pretty, feminine dresses again instead of ratty, torn, and too-tight jeans. I think you will find that men will treat you with more respect when you wear a dress, too. My 3 sons think so, too! Lovely job, Sara, and kudos for being a trend setter!

Oh man…I share your love of Tula fabrics !! I just got the coloring book, LOVE!!! I love the tudor pattern with the tiger, although the elephant print would work to 🙂 I loved testing the Appalosa bag..hmmmm perhaps I should remake this in Tula?? Yes I think I shall 🙂 Thanks for all you do!

Man I’m so late to the Tula Pink fabric obsession party! I began quilting about 4 years ago (minus last year since all I did was make masks). I’m so sad to see all of her out of print fabrics that I don’t have access to. I didn’t even realize at first that fabrics even went out of print! I’m also totally jealous that you’ve had personal contact with her, that’s totally cool. I’m in love with your dresses as well. I own a serger, but haven’t started to try and make any clothes with it or my sewing machine. Someday when I grow up I want to be just like you. Although I’ll be 43 this year and it looks like I might be twice your age. lol
