Today’s post is from Kristy of Lower Your Presser Foot.

Hi everyone, my name is Kristy and I blog over at Lower Your Presser Foot. I live in Sydney, Australia which is a great place with lots of active sewers and fellow bloggers, but when it comes to inspiration from the sewing blogosphere I’m in a completely different season which makes it hard to have a rational sewing plan!

I sew a bit of everything – a lot of patterns from Burda Style magazine, some vintage patterns and of course current patterns. For this review I decided to make Simplicity 2724, which a friend gave to me earlier this year and I only discovered when I wrote this review that it’s now OOP. I’m not sure what makes a pattern less popular than another one – I think this a great pattern!

This is one of those Project Runway patterns that have a number of options to choose from – I went with the bodice with the pleated neckline, three quarter sleeves and a pencil skirt. I’m a pear shape so I chose to use a size 6 bodice and a size 10 skirt, but I found this pattern to be really large. I took it in a few centimetres along each seam but looking at these photographs I think this version is still a little large in the skirt – it’s not quite the fitted pencil skirt look I like.

I’m not much a muslin maker (so many things to sew, so little time!) and I like to jump in with both feet and hope for the best. The fabric I used has been in my stash for quite a while and both were thrifted pieces so it was a risk worth taking. For the bodice I used a thin, drapey cotton in a brilliant emerald green, and the skirt is made from a thin wool in a mini black and white houndstooth print (which was unbelievably difficult to photograph). I lined the skirt portion only because we’re heading into winter down here in the southern hemisphere and I tend to live in stockings for the next few months.

The only changes I made to the pattern was to reduce the length by 5cm before cutting it out and I put two walking vents at the back instead of the front because I’m not one for flashing too much upper thigh especially since I want to wear this dress to work. If you’re thinking about making this dress I’d recommend double checking that length.

I’d also change the zipper in the side seam to a traditional centre back zip. The neckline is wide enough to just fit over my head but it’s practically impossible to avoid getting makeup around the neck edge which annoys me no end.

Overall I can highly recommend this pattern if you already have it or are able to track it down. It’s not too difficult to make and the instructions with diagrams are helpful enough to work out what you need to do, although it’s a bit time consuming given how many pattern pieces there are and all those pleats to mark and fold. I think it has loads of possibilities with different combinations of fabric, plus those sleeve, bodice and skirt choices.

Thanks everyone for reading my post, and for Sara for hosting this Dress Up Party – it’s been great discovering new (to me) blogs.
