Ansel Camera Bag

Sew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag sewing pattern, available in 3 different sizes

Today I’d like to introduce you to the second new pattern (available as pdf and physical paper patterns), the Ansel Camera Bag! The new pattern are on sale for 15% off, now through Wednesday, May 20th. I made these bags using Tula Pink‘s ‘Eden’ fabric that she just showed at Quilt Market last night, with coordinating Aurifil 40wt thread. And if you like the way my straps look, I added some topstitched Renaissance Ribbons (Tula Pink, or course!) to each of the strapping pieces before attaching them to the bags.

Almost all of my pattern testers agreed that this sewing pattern would be appropriate for a confident beginner.

There is a free add-on tutorial to add the optional zippered mesh pocket to the lining of the lid, and that tutorial will be up on my blog next week.

I will also be selling hardware kits for this pattern (we have those side release buckles in FIVE different colors…they are pictured on the pattern cover in yellow, which is one of the colors that we’ll have!) starting next week.

The Ansel Camera Bag pattern comes with 3 different sizes of camera bags, so you can choose the right size for you and your camera equipment! All 3 sizes feature a side release buckle on the front and adjustable strap on the sides of the bag. The medium size has one inner divider attached with hook and loop, and the large size has two dividers; the dividers help to separate lens and other equipment. Use your favorite fabric print to carry your camera in style!

Supplies (supplies in this list will make 1 camera bag*)

  • 3/4 yard of Exterior Fabric (allow 1 yard for the large bag if fussy cutting)
  • 1 yard of Lining Fabric
  • 3/4 yard of Solid Fabric (for straps/binding) – please use quilting cotton
  • 1/2 yard of cheap fabric (will not be seen in the finished bag)
  • 1/2 yard of By Annie’s Soft and Stable (Soft and Stable is a 1/8” thick, foam sew-in interfacing; one of my testers also recommends automotive headliner fabric in place of the Soft and Stable – I strongly recommend either of these)
  • 2 yards of 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or medium-weight fusible interfacing)
  • 1/6 yard of Pellon Peltex #71 fusible one-sided Interfacing (optional but recommended: for a sturdy bottom)
  • Plastic side-release/parachute buckle (they should be able to accommodate 1” wide strap – mine were 2-3/4” tall)
  •                 You will need one buckle for size small and two buckles for sizes medium and large
  • Two 1-1/2” metal rectangles
  • One 1-1/2” metal slider (look for my Sew Sweetness Purseware, available on my site or at your local quilt shop)
  • 1/2 yard of 1/2” foam (or green craft foam – the foam I used is 24” wide)
  • Hook and loop closure (Velcro), 3/4” wide – for medium (1-1/4 yard) or large (1-1/2 yard) only
  •                 *if making the smaller sizes, you will have a bit more fabric left over as fabric requirements cover any size bag

The pattern features a slip pocket in the lining (for stashing your lens cap or other small items), as well as removable dividers on the medium and large sizes of the bag. In addition to the foam interfacing, there is also 1/2″ craft foam attached in the lining, which will further protect your camera equipment. This is a sturdy bag!

Also here was the set of prototype bags, as we’ll call them. I made this set in Tim Holtz fabrics, but when people saw them it seemed like people wanted to see them on the pattern cover in my usual bright colors, so I listened!

Thank you once again to all of the pattern testers, who were lovely and helpful as they usually are! They worked really hard on their bags and I hope you enjoy looking through all of their photos!

The floral print is called Krokos Sprites. Terry did such a beautiful job as she always does of course!

ansellizLiz of Moments…. made her bag slightly modified, as a 6″ x 5″ x 4.5″ case for her smaller dslr. I thought it was also very clever that she added a handle and that small 2″ box on the interior of the bag. Brilliant Liz!

Sew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag by Maria of Beautiful BloomsMaria of Beautiful Blooms made her bag in a black and aqua trellis fabric. I love how it came out, and her daughter’s already claimed it for a video camera bag so oops, looks like she’ll need to be making another!!

Sew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag by DonnaSew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag by DonnaDonna made her bag in camera-appropriate fabrics, and she used red faux leather for the bottom of the bag too! I also like what she did with the straps (matching camera fabric with red solid). Gorgeous work Donna!

Sew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag by JamieJamie made the small version and paired 3 different fabrics to highlight different components of the bag. Jamie said she used automotive headliner fabric for her bag. Wonderful work Jamie!

Sew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag by ReeceReece of Happy Okapi made her bag in pretty sorbet camera fabric. She used plastic snaps on the inside of the bag to position the dividers instead of hook and loop, and I love the creativity of that! You can read more about Reece’s bag on her blog.

Sew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag by GwenGwen of GML Designs made her bag with cream colored cottom webbing in place of the strap fabric, and also added a handle to the top of her bag. It looks so cute in the linen dots!!!

Sew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag by RenukaRenuka made the small version and used a fabric from New Zealand on the exterior. She used a rectangle and slider to match the front side release buckle. Looks just beautiful Renuka!

Sew Sweetness Ansel Camera Bag by KatieKatie made her bag in Tula Pink Acacia, and found matching orange side release buckles and plastic hardware for her strap. I think it was a fantastic choice to use the orange fabric at the bottom too! Wonderful work Katie!

can see this as a lunch box, but what do you think I would use to insulate it?

  4. Reece says:

It’s so fun seeing all of the tester bags and how different they all manage to look. Great job everyone!

  5. Janet P says:

I LOVE this bag!!! I want to make it as a Daddy Diaper Bag for my nephew who will be Mr. Mom in a very few months. What adjustments will I need to make if I don’t use the 1/2″ foam padding? I will also make gathered elasticized interior pockets.

  6. Katie says:

Hi I was wondering if I could buy one

  7. Teresa says:

I rather liked your Tim Holtz bags! Not everyone likes bright bags plus the darker fabrics are more unisex. I can see making this for my son’s birthday gift!

  8. Lisa says:

Your bags are Fabulous! I’m curious about what the back looks like? Is it plain or is there a pocket on it?
Thanks for posting all those photos of different samples!

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Thank you! No pocket in the back (although you could easily add a slip pocket!)

  9. Jany says:

I love your patterns! Could I sell my made bags using your patterns? Thanks!!

    1. Sara Lawson says:

Hi Jany! Yes, the home sewist may make and sell items made from any of my patterns at craft fairs or online. Hope this helps!

  10. Sheryl says:

I’d love to see a modification of backpack straps instead of shoulder straps. Has anyone done this?
