I always need pockets to keep things orgnized. 🙂

  42. Sarah Jane says:

I always like to have zippered pockets in my bags to keep everything in its proper place. I also love to add “bling” to my bags – but I tend to save my shiny metal Handmade “labels” just for the really special bags since I’m on a tight budget. 🙂

  53. Jenny brooks says:

I do like lots of pockets with zippers…I will use different fabrics to make the bag look different and pretty. Don’t really use a lot of other embellishments, I’m always afraid they will fall off.

  54. Betsy N says:

I love pockets, zippered, gathered, elastic, gotta have lots of pockets. I don’t care for ruffles too much, but I love shiny hardware, especially something that says “handmade” or “handcrafted”.

  55. I love zippered pockets, and maybe a gusseted pocket too!

  56. I love to add extra pockets. So far, I’m really only comfortable with patch pockets but I would love to be able to add zippered welt ones.

I would love some zippers and a ribbon across the middle!

  58. Amy K. says:

I’ve added all kinds of embellishments – ruffles, pleats, quilted panels, etc, etc. I *always* use rings to attach my handles because it adds a professional touch, and it’s easy to replace the handle if needed.

  59. Beth says:

Hi! If I knew how (and you have totally inspired me to want to sew my own purse/s but I need some beginner patterns), I would want to have meaningful pocket and zippered areas that do not clutter the outside of the bag because I prefer a smoother look on the outside. Really, it seems that many of these pattern makers are on top of that, yay 🙂

  60. Jennifer D says:

I don’t usually change or add the same thing. Sometimes it’s more pockets, either on the outside or the inside. Or I’ll change the straps, making them longer or making them handles instead. I always change the kind of fabric or material to make the bag or purse. The hardware usually changes, too, depending on what I have on hand and/or who the bag or purse is intended for. I always make the bag or purse according to the pattern * the first time*. After that, all bets are off! 🙂

  61. Vicky P says:

I like to add pockets and zippers even if the zipper really has no purpose.

  62. Barbara P. says:

I love that flower on the last bag and would add that if I knew how to make one.

  63. I love using big statement buttons. They can really add a pop to a bag

  64. Caitlin Anderson says:

I don’t really add a lot to my bags, I try to make the fabric do the talking, but I do like pockets and contrasting zip colors. Although I am loving seeing these bags with bows and flowers on them, but don’t think I could make them look as good

  65. Heather Crook says:

Extra pockets for sure. Some zippers too. Magnetic snaps are my friends!

  71. Barbara says:

Zippers and decorative buttons, sometimes a piping.

  72. car2ole says:

    Zippered pockets!

  73. Kim Andrews says:

I usually add an inside zippered pocket. I would like to attempt to add piping detail

    1. SonJa says:

Oh Kim, if you’d like a very cool bag design with piping, do try out Sara’s latest Rockstar bag! I just started last night and got the pining made by myself and installed. Sara has a great tutorial for making piping and the instructions for installing it on the Rockstar are so simply laid out! It was sooooooo easy! I can’t believe I avoided piping all this time.

Zippered closing for top of bag, inside zippered pockets, and outside zippered pockets!

I like the Favorite Bag because I like to embellish with fllowers.

  80. Dana says:

Pockets! And interesting straps and quilting

  81. Alicia says:

    Pockets! Always

  82. Danette says:

I like to add a zipper pull. It makes it easier to pull the zipper open and adds something cute. I bought a lot at a store for 50% off to keep on hand. Mostly, initials, but other items, too. I attach the ring around a small lobster claw clasp and then attach the clasp on the hole of the zipper.

  90. Carla G says:

Zippered pockets and a magnetic snap closure pocket on the outside. 🙂

  91. Danie says:

When I make bags I include some sort of pocket and some extra embellishments like sequins. I like sparkles.

  92. Ellee says:

Each bag I make has at least two zipper pockets, one inside and one outside, and I like to make pull tabs for my zippers.

  93. SonJa says:

For embellishments, I love grommets and rivets because they are so easy to use and come in a wide variety of designs. I Conquered my first ever piping on the Rockstar bag last night, so I can cross that off (thanks for the great tutorial and pattern instructions Sara!). As for embellishments I would add if I knew how? Hmmm..I’d really like to add a “?facing?”‘ Piece around my zippered pockets…and have it look good. Mine are pretty crappy looking when I try. Ruffles would be a neat skill to learn.

    1. SonJa says:

Oh yes…and pockets on the gussets! Sometimes a sip, but often a toggle (not a fan of elastic…looks too much like a baby sack)…and I often change out the zipper head so the head is a contrasting color with the zip.

  94. Mara says:

It depends on what I am sewing for, I do like to add a zippered pocket if there isn’t one in the pattern.

  95. Marcia O says:

I like lots of pockets, one has to be zippered and if there is a divider…awesome. I also really love patterns that give you options/alternatives, such as handles, pockets….

  96. Amy S says:

I’ve been fond of fabric flowers for the last while 🙂

  97. Carrie says:

Neat ruffles, grommets, layered sections/pockets [I’m so stinkin’ functional, but I like visual interest too] with multiple prints, some finished non-fabric element.

  98. Definitely zips and pockets! Love using completely different fabric especially wool 🙂

  99. Emma says:

I’ve added fabric flowes, lace and even pockets with lace zips to embellish my bags 🙂

    Zippers and lots of pockets
