Today’s post is from Emily of Mommy’s Naptime. Emily is the master of making quilts on the small scale (the tinier the better!), so it is no surprise that she chose this beautiful project from the book to make!

Hello! I’m excited to be a part of this blog hop! If you look through my blog feed, you’ll notice that I love small quilted projects. Today I’m sharing my version of the Temple Pillow. I love quilted pillows and this pillow delivers all the great piecing and bold designs that I love!
I decided to go bold with my fabric choices. using some large scraps of home decor fabric (twill I believe), that were given to me by a guild member. I paired these bold geometric prints with a peppered cotton in green tea. Let me share a little tip – using two different substrates made this project harder; these fabrics both fray more than quilting cottons. It worked out pretty well though, because the peppered cotton stretches a bit more than other fabrics, so it was easier to fudge the piecing when necessary!

I found that the cutting instructions were really nice and straight forward. The fabric requirement list left quite a bit leftover, I’d rather there be extra, so this is no big deal for me. When cutting the shapes I cut them all by hand using a freezer paper template. To do this you can trace your templates onto freezer paper and press the freezer paper template shiny side down onto the fabric. I cut the shapes in a stack of four strips at a time. The freezer paper template doesn’t slide, so it’s actually pretty quick.
The blocks came together very easily. I’m always impressed with making quilted pillows – they’re so fast! I omitted the border, and the binding. I prefer using 18″ pillow inserts, so the pillow size was perfect without that border. I typically don’t care much for bound pillows, so I omitted that too. This also speeds up the process, I’m all for projects that can be made in just a day or two!
My favorite part of this pillow is the back. That zipper placket is beautiful! The back is lined and perfect. I am a big fan of such a perfect finish to the project.
I even remembered to add my label to the inside!
The instructions for this project were very straightforward, and it was really a great, quick project. Don’t be afraid of the curves, they’re fun!

I love the pillow and also the tag inside. Is the tag some sort of preprinted tag that can be signed? I would really like to know the source if there is any. Thank you. Joanna

HI Joanna, The tag is just my blog header, re-sized and printed on some kona from spoonflower.com. I ordered a FQ of them – each label measures about 1.25″ x 4″ with about a 1/4″ between each label. They are perfect for small projects. I use Pellon EZ Steam (or wonder under) to fuse them in place – and I leave the edges raw. a simple topstitch makes it perfect. My blog header / labels were designed by my friend Shruti (www.13woodhouseroad.com/).

I was going to ask the same question. So you basically sent them a jpg of your header and they printed it on fabric for you? Those are so cool!

        1. Emily says:

Exactly Trudie! Give it a try. It’s awfully expensive, but I had a coupon code for a free FQ – so that’s why I made the label’s small. They’re perfect for pillows and pouches.

            So they are washable? (hoping)
