Sewtopia: Chicago 2015

Sewtopia_Chicago_edited-2

I’ve travelled all around the country in the past year, and being that I’m from Chicago, I always wondered why none of the events I’m going to are actually held in Chicago. It’s a great place, so much to do. Well, now an awesome event has come to Chicago (I feel it is somehow a personal victory, even though I had nothing to do with organizing it, lol).

Sewtopia Retreat is coming to Chicago April 14-16, 2015. This is a sewing retreat located at the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago. You’ll probably be able to see Lake Michigan from your hotel room.

The best part of this retreat, though, are the two fabulous instructors that are lined up; Latifah of The Quilt Engineer and Rita of Red Pepper Quilts. Rita is from Australia, so this is probably the only time you might be able to take a class with her!

Latifah makes one-of-a-kind quilt designs, like her Convergence Quilt, pictured above. You can certainly see why her site is called The Quilt Engineer!

Rita always knows how to perfectly combine bright prints and low volume fabrics in a way I have never seen. This is her economy block, which was very popular across the interwebs.

Registration opens August 1st at 10am MST time.  Regular registration fee is $375.  We will be offering a discount to any past attendee of Sewtopia Salt Lake and Sew Ok.  There will also be an early bird registration discount, quantities limited.

Registration includes:

Shop Hop Thursday, April 16, 2015

Open Social Thursday night, April 16, 2015

Classes and lunches for Friday and Saturday

Access to Sewtopia’s Sewing Lounge after classes are done

Swaps and any Challenges (if you choose to participate)

Personally, I have been to several sewing retreats (Sewing Summit, Camp Stitchalot), and they are really a time for sewing and a time for bonding with other sewists/quilters. In this day of blogs and Instagram, it’s such a revelation to meet someone in person who you’ve either been following or speaking with on-line. Each time I go to a retreat, I meet people that I’ve known on-line, and I feel like meeting them in person makes us even better friends, which makes me happy and is a win-win. To speak nothing of the great teachers you’ll have the experience of learning from!

Sukie and Jemellia have organized this great event, and if you’d like to register come August 1, 2014, you can do so on the Sewtopia website. Woohoo for something fun coming to Chicago!!
