Hi, I’m Lynn Harris and blog over at The Little Red Hen. I was thrilled when Sara asked if I would try out Jaybird’s HexnMore ruler on the Science Fair quilt. I will be needing a few baby quilts for gifts in the not too distant future and thought this would be the perfect baby quilt.

The pattern calls for 20 2 1/2″ inch strips and  1 3/4 yards fabric for background and binding. I pulled fabrics from my stash.

Although the pattern calls for strips cut from the entire width of fabric, I was easily able to follow the directions using fat quarters from my stash.

The Hex N More ruler was very easy to use and made for accurate cutting of the strip pieced sections of the hexagons. The background pieces were also easily cut with the ruler.

This was a really quick quilt top to make and I am thrilled with the results. I used techniques such as strip piecing that I don’t normally use. Those larger background pieces made it all fit together perfectly and I love the way the pieced background allows some of the brighter pieced hexagons to float.

Now I get to quilt it!!

I can see this being a “go to” pattern for baby quilts. I think different fabric choices would really change the look of this too. It can go from graphic, and modern with solids, to cute with novelty prints, or sweet with florals. I can see just about any fabrics looking great with this pattern.
